Ge-ge-ge no nyobou 4/10
aka last-minute hesitation...
Fumie running into her home... What's wrong? Mother? Sister having baby? Are you sick? No, no, the matchmaker is coming! But Father has instructions -- let's do this carefully. You kneel outside, slide the door open, I'll introduce you, then you slide the door shut. Don't stand up!
And then the theme...
Father and a male matchmaker. Fumie slides the door open, gets introduced, the matchmaker says she's even prettier than her picture, they laugh, and father waves her to slide the door shut.
She ducks back into the kitchen, mother and sister "How did it go?" Oh, fine, but I was so worried.
And... she runs into the matchmaker in the hall. Oh, you're tall!
Father and mother fussing over pictures. This is his house, neighborhood. Mother is still worrying.
Telephone. Father talking, then hangs up. "YES" Where's Fumie? He hears the door open, and yells, Fumie, they are coming for miai... oops, it's the aunt. And she's not happy. So she's arguing with father, saying it's better if Fumie stays at home. Father gets angry, and says leave us alone. Fumie overhears... and ends up assuring everyone that she understands, it is better for her to stay here forever. Then she goes out, shopping.
Except she's at the riverside, singing to herself. Father joins her there, and says it probably would have been better to arrange her wedding before, except, well, it just stretched... Fumie says she remembers when Grandmother died, and the two of them came here. (Flashback to father crying). She says she guesses she really was born to take care of the house. Then father says, well, really, this miai -- I want to meet this man. Fumie asks why. Father has a long soliliquy, I think focusing on making sure that this man really is good enough for Fumie.
And Fumie says, well, okay, I'll do it.
Cut to a man singing in the street. He looks at the name on the house, and goes in. There's a woman digging in the closet, and drags out a Boston bag. He says, "Are we going somewhere?" and she says, "Tokyo! I told you..." Apparently the artist's parents. The miai is on!
And a medley of clips from upcoming shows (next week?). Fumie in a kimono... the man and woman with the woman yelling at a young man to make a decision... Genbee (father) saying "He's a good man" and Fumie saying "Dan dan" (thanks) to Genbee.
I guess this was a sort of "refusal of the call" episode. Although it seems more like a hesitation or hiccup than a real refusal?
