aka In the big city...
This episode picked up with the young punk running down the train compartment, pointing at "you!" Then pounding on Shigeru, pinching his cheek. And he wakes up and says, "Oh, it's you." Then the punk sits down in the seat across from Shigeru on the man's hat. He pulls it out, and takes his own hat off and tries on the other man's hat. Then Shigeru asks if he is going to Tokyo, and they discuss what they are doing on the train. Shigeru says he went to a wedding, and the punk asks whose? Shigeru says mine, and somewhat reluctantly introduces Fumie. The punk stands, sweeps the hat off, and claims to be an old friend of Shigeru's.
Run the theme. It has definitely been shortened.
The punk is complimenting Fumie on being such a beauty. She asks, "Gege?" and the punk says that's Shigeru's name, since he was young. Shigeru says, "You're the only one who called me that, and it was just to bully me." The punk says, "Could someone with such a sweet face be a bully?" and smiles...
Meanwhile, Shuhei (Shigeru's father) is polishing a camera in his house, and asks what Kinuyo is writing. She says it's a letter to Fumie. Shuhei says she just left this morning, what are you writing? Kinuyo says she's repeating her advice so that Fumie doesn't forget anything.
And back in the train, the punk is eating onigiri -- the sekihan rice balls that Miyako made for Fumie and Shigeru. He says it's delicious, and takes the tea out of Fumie's hands. He jokes with Shigeru about work.
The man who had been sitting across from them comes back, and gets upset finding the punk sitting in his place, wearing his hat. The punk gives him his hat, and grabs the last onigiri as he dashes off. The man sits down, grumbling about "Is he someone you know?" Shigeru and Fumie both say, "I'm sorry."
In the next car, the punk smiles at a young boy, and seems to offer the onigiri to him. The young boy comes over, and the punk pulls the rice ball back and eats it. The young boy starts crying. His mother gets up and rushes over. The punk slips by her, and sits in her seat, grinning.
Fumie asks Shigeru about this punk. He says he teases a lot. But that's not the worst. The worst is that he never brushes his teeth, so his breath stinks! (Note: for those who know the comic, the teasing and the lack of personal hygiene is nezumi kozo, the rat man.) Fumie asks if he is bad, and Shigeru says, no, not really, but...
When they arrive in Tokyo, it's 7 AM. Fumie and Shigeru are walking through one of the underground brick tunnels, and Fumie is amazed. So many people! Shigeru assures her that this is still very few, it's still early. If you are here when the rush hits, you can't breath, there are so many people. Fumie says the only time she's seen so many people in her home town is during a matsuri (festival). Shigeru smiles and says, every day in Tokyo is a matsuri.
The punk starts calling "Gege! Wait!" somewhere behind them. Shigeru glances back, then says, "Run!" and starts rushing. But the punk catches up. He looks up at Fumie and says, "You're very tall." Shigeru sighs, and asks him where he is going. The punk says he might go to Nippori today. Shigeru says, "Oh, too bad, we're going somewhere else." Then he grabs Fumie and rushes off again, saying, "Hurry!" The crowd bangs into the punk, and Fumie says, "Is it okay?" Shigeru says it may be their only chance, just ignore him and hurry.
As they come back outside, a voice calls, "Murai? Are you Fumie Murai?" She looks around, and a driver in a chauffeur's uniform greets her. The voice over explains that her older sister who lives in Tokyo asked the driver from her husband's company to pick them up. The chauffeur takes them to a very fancy car. Fumie comments on his recognition of them, and he says, "Well, it was pretty easy. A very tall woman..." and his voice trails off.
They start to get in, and there is a wrapped box on the seat. The driver says the older sister sent it, as a wedding present. Fumie opens it, and uncovers a fancy clock. She imagines it in the window of the house, as shown in the pictures during the wedding interview.
Suddenly, the punk is banging on the window. The driver says that if this is a friend, they could take him, too. Shigeru says no, we don't know him at all. Please go. The driver pulls out. The punk is left standing, telling himself that it looks as if Shigeru has had some good luck.
They are driving along. The driver explains that this is Marunouchi. Fumie exclaims about all the buildings. Then she asks whether they will see Tokyo Tower, and Shigeru says no, it's not on their way. The driver offers to take them around, but Shigeru says they are in a hurry, maybe some other time. The driver says he hasn't been in the neighborhood where Shigeru lives, can you give me directions when we get there? Shigeru says okay.
As they are driving, Fumie starts singing. Apparently about this time, there was a popular song that talked about going to Tokyo is like going to paradise, and she is singing that song (New York has had various songs like that, I think.)
Next, they are driving through a very rural area. Shigeru says his house is just a little farther. Fumie wonders if they are still in Tokyo, that she didn't know they had such fields... the car suddenly brakes. There is a farmer with a cow crossing the road. Shigeru looks around and says, "Just ahead."
The car stops among some old houses. The one straight ahead, the fence is broken, the boards weathered.
Fumie looks at the house and says, "Here? No, it can't be true."
To be continued...
