a.k.a. racing will do that to you
Fumie was sewing on a sewing machine, while Aiko played with cloth nearby. Fumie said, "Don't fold that too much, it's for your uncle's wedding." She thought about Takashi, her younger brother, standing braced in the doorway telling Genbee, her father, that his girlfriend was the most important thing to him. Then she realized that she had run out of cloth.
At the shopping area, she found the three wives gathered at the store where Yamada lived. They greeted her. Matsui, the wife turned cosmetic sales lady, glanced at Fumie's shopping basket and said, "You bought cloth? That's unusual." Fumie said, "I'm making a present for my brother's wedding." The wives said, "Your brother is getting married? Congratulations!" Yamada said, "Oh, I hope it gets connected in time." Fumie said, "What?" Yamada grinned. "Television! We bought one." There was a burst of sound inside the house, and she turned. "There it is. Come on, everyone, let's watch baseball." The wives ran into the house to watch a baseball game on television.
At the bookstore, Michiko invited her inside. Michiko, Kiyo and Fumie sat at the table. Michiko said, "Good, so your brother will get married?" Fumie nodded, "Yes, I think Genbee has learned." She remembered him standing in the bookstore angry that she had not told him the truth about their life. Mitsuko stood up and said, "Let me fix you a little snack." She started cooking croquettes.
Fumie said, "I haven't seen Taichi recently." Kiyo said, "He hasn't been in recently. I think he's got a friend, maybe." Then she grumbled, "Actually, we don't have many customers. Everything is TV. It's too quiet. And there are those people who want to close the store, too." Michiko nodded, "I really don't know if we can keep the store going." Fumie said, "Is it that bad?" Michiko said, "Really, 10 yen just isn't enough." Kiyo said, "We could raise it to 15 yen." Michiko said, "But if we raise the price, we lose customers. I don't know what to do."
Just then, Taichi's voice could be heard in the store. "Hello?"
Soon, he was sitting in the back, eating a croquette. He grinned and said, "You have the best food." Michiko smiled and said, "Eat as many as you want." Kiyo glanced at him and asked, "Where have you been recently?" He said, "Oh, here and there." Michiko said, "I heard there's a new place in Ginza where a lot of young people go. Is that where you've been?" He tilted his head and said, "Actually... I've been at the jazz coffee shop." Michiko said, "Aren't they dangerous? I heard criminals go there." He shook his head. "No. They're really safe."
Masashi, Michiko's husband, came in. He glanced around, and said, "I'll eat." He sat down, unfolded a racing form, and started circling things with a red pencil. Kiyo grumbled, "Another racing form? That's 40 yen. And we're worrying about 10 yen. And the next race, you have to get another racing form, right?" Taichi looked over Masashi's shoulder and said, "In the eighth, Long Ears should be good." Masashi turned and stared at Taichi. "You know racing?" Taichi said, "Well, I've read about it. But I've never actually gone to the racetrack." Masashi said, "Reading about it isn't the real thing. You should go to the racetrack. The next time
I go, why don't you go with me?"
Kiyo said, "Now, don't teach him your bad habits." Taichi looked at Masashi. "Actually, I want to go. Could I, please?" He looked around at Michiko, Kiyo, and Fumie. "Just to see what it is like."
Meanwhile, Shigeru was visiting Fukuzawa's office. Fukuzawa explained that he was going to publish his magazine quickly. Shigeru said, "I thought you were going to wait until fall." Fukuzawa shook his head. "Early is better." He got up and quickly sketched at his desk, been held up a sheet of paper with two bold characters. "Here's the name of the new magazine. Zeta!" Shigeru nodded. "That is different. But what's the hurry?" Fukuzawa said, "Well, when I was sick, I got to thinking. I have to move quickly. I don't know how much more time I've got. So..."
Miyako, Fukuzawa's assistant, walked into the office. She greeted Shigeru, "Mizuki-sensei! It's good to see you again." Then she looked at Fukuzawa. "Well, I got them. I got Denshin to buy a one page ad, and the hotel bought three ads." Shigeru said, "You sold the advertising yourself?" Fukuzawa stood up and grinned. "Actually, she does better without me. A beautiful woman asks, and they buy." Miyako chuckled. Then she picked up a piece of paper off of Fukuzawa's desk. "Did you see this?" He said, "Yes. I understand. Go ahead and do it." She took the paper and went to her desk, and picked up the telephone.
Fukuzawa looked at Shigeru. "We're going ahead with the new magazine. But, I'm sorry, I can't give you a break. Will you help me?" He held out his hand. Shigeru grinned. Then he shook Fukuzawa's hand.
Back at the house, Fumie said, "So he's going to put up a new magazine soon?" Shigeru nodded. "Yes. I'll have to draw quickly."
Uraki called from the entry way. "Hello?" Fumie looked at Shigeru. "Uraki?" Shigeru said, "What's he doing here? Just tell him we're not here." Uraki walked in and glanced at Fumie. "Oh. Sorry to barge in. I brought guests." He waved his hand, and Taichi and Masashi walked in behind him, looking embarrassed. Fumie said, "What are you doing with Uraki?"
Uraki said, "I met them at the racetrack. They were talking about Shigeru, and I heard them." He looked at Shigeru. "I didn't know you were becoming so famous." Shigeru said, "So what are you doing here?"
Uraki fell to his knees, closed his eyes, and said, "Food! We're hungry. We walked from the race track here, after we lost all our money."
Shigeru scratched his head.
Later, with everyone gathered around the table, Fumie said, "It's not much..." Uraki looked at the bowls, and sniffed. "It really isn't much." Shigeru said, "Beggars shouldn't complain." Taichi said, "I'm sorry. That guy is rude."
Uraki grinned. "No, I'm an old friend. Besides, if we had won, we'd have lots of money." Shigeru said, "Right." Uraki looked at him. "Hey, I'm poor today. But the ghost of poverty always hangs around here." Shigeru shook his head. Uraki said, "You know, you keep drawing manga. But the times are changing. Me, I'm always looking for new ways to make money."
Suddenly, Masashi interrupted. "It's inevitable. The war ruined us, and there's nothing we can do about it."
Shigeru looked thoughtful. Then he smiled. "It's inevitable? I never thought that. I love drawing. I can't even think about not doing it. If you love what you're doing, that's enough."
Masashi looked at Uraki. "Humph. If you love what you're doing, that's enough. So do what you love."
