The NHK yearly drama is nearing its end - apparently the end of the month will also mark the end of this year's drama, to be followed soon by another. But my wife was grumbling today that they've started adding water. When I asked her what she meant, she admitted that the main conflicts are all wrapped up, and they are doing long sentimental recollections and such, usually backed with runaway overblown melodies. She thinks they ran out of material, but of course, can't stop early, so they are filling.
And the phrase she uses for this is adding water. I suppose borrowed from cooking. But it does seem pretty useful, the notion of stretching the story by adding water. I keep thinking of a sponge or dishrag, swelling up as the water is added. Or maybe soup or stew, stretched by adding water?
So if you feel like you are stretching your story, consider squeezing the water out of it. Keep those stories dry!
水を増して - mizu o mashite
Not a good idea. Even if the recollections and dreams and such are well-done, at some point they are just too much. Keep the story dry, and write it to the natural length.
