I know, it's old and was heavily panned - but it just made it to Japanese TV, and I watched it.
I thought it got bogged down in trying to be romance, character, let's build up some kind of mystical background - and lost track of the action in the muddle. In the middle of all the other stuff, the story is a revenge story, starting with the death of the heroine, and her resurrection/transformation. But then we've got a slow, slow flashback filling in her life and times, setting the stage for the evil empire that is pushing addictive, untested cosmetics. Yech, pooie - cut out all the atmospherics, socio-economic posturing, and focus on the special effects of her new lifestyle and the revenge plot, and this might not be bad. Of course, that would cut three-fourths of the current film, but . . .
The point for the writer, I think, is to keep a tight focus on the plot.

And one from you to us
Date: 2008-02-23 10:42 pm (UTC)Australia has 5 major TV channels, and a number of subscription channels but these are local to each major city, so if you want to see stuff like that, it's always been a trip to the local 'arthouse' video store - until now.

Date: 2008-02-24 03:25 am (UTC)My theory is that we've got more and more channels trying to fill 24 hours a day, so almost anything is likely to turn up somewhere. Lots of stuff that in the past wouldn't make it now seems to be coming back as filler.
