That was puzzling.

We live in faculty housing, a set of four apartment buildings. And in the parking lot, there's a corner that one of the women usually plants flowers on.

So this pleasant Sunday evening, I was carrying the trash out for tomorrow's pickup. And noticed her carefully filling a small pan with water at the faucet and walking it over to her flower area. She poured it out, and went back for a second pan.

I asked her if she could use the hose that was nearby. She explained that it needed two people, one to hold the end on the faucet while the other sprayed the flowers. And then she asked if I might help. The way she said it, she pretty evidently didn't expect me to agree.

But I just said sure, and proceeded to help unroll the hose and hold it while she sprayed. It didn't take very long. And she thanked me profusely.

Mitsuko asked me what I had been doing, since running the trash out doesn't really take very long. I explained, and we both wondered why it was so surprising that I would help out.

Oh well. The flowers got watered.
