aka Will she or won't she dance at the obon festival?

The short version: Today's episode focused on 10-year-old Nunoe (the little girl who will become the wife) deciding whether or not to compete with the boys at the upcoming obon festival. So three years have passed since yesterday, and Japan has gone to war... but for one little girl, the real question is whether or not to try to win some lemon soda.

I surrendered and went looking around the web. http://www9.nhk.or.jp/gegege/ has lots of stuff about the show, but in Japanese (of course). Still, I think I sorted out some of the names. Key players:

Nunoe is the girl who will become the wife. Father is Genbee, mother Toshi. Older sisters Miyako and Yukie. Brothers Takashi and Kuniko.

The artist is Shigeru Murai.

There are some others, but I haven't got their names yet. Anyway...

Today's show started out with a medley of short clips from the last two days: no one listening to the little girl (Nunoe!) at the dinner table, her and the boy standing in the woods watching the ghost walk past, grandma and Nunoe talking about scary but funny, and Nunoe commenting about things you can't see, but are here...

And go to the theme.

Next, we got a very short frame introducing the summer of such and such year (Showa 17? 1942), Nunoe is now 10 years old, and Japan is at war. No one is buying kimonos, but Genbee (father) is buying a katana, a samurai sword. Nunoe brings in watermelon and tea, and gets introduced to the salesman. Also, Yukie (2nd oldest daughter) steps in briefly to say she is going to her class.

Cut to Nunoe praying at a shrine. A voice tells her something, and then her friend steps out. A short talk brings up that there is going to be a contest for children dancing at obon (the festival in the middle of August when the dead are said to return) and there will be a prize of ramone (lemon soda). Nunoe seems eager to win that prize.

Then the two young girls see Yukie going past. Nunoe calls to her and asks her what she is doing, reminding her that her class is the other direction. Yukie is startled, then says, "Please don't tell Father." And walks on to meet a boy.

Nunoe's friend says they are probably going to go to the movie, and then maybe drink coffee!

Back to Genbee in the store. He is working his abacus (doing accounts). Grandma starts out of the house, then steps back and asks him about business. He admits that no one is buying right now, then gets upset and tells her to go on.

And we see the girls practicing bon odori (dance) in the lot in front of the shrine. Then four boys turn up and start teasing them. The boys grab sticks, and say they will win the ramone. Grandma stops across the street and watches. Nunoe's friend watches the boys dance and says, "Ha! Nunoe will beat you, easily." But Nunoe shakes her head, and says maybe she won't go to the obon festival. Pretty clearly she doesn't want trouble.

Father is sitting in the street, enjoying the sunshine, and sees Yukie's teacher. He calls out to her, and asks how Yukie is doing. Then we see him stamping through the house, bursting in on Toshi (mother) and Nunoe to ask, "Where's Yukie?" When mother says at class, he says, "Today is a holiday!" Grumble, grumble... And when Yukie comes in the door, he is ready to yell at her. "Where have you been? Today was a holiday..." She says she forgot, but it was such a beautiful day that she went shopping, and see, I bought some ribbon for Nunoe. Father grumbles, but let's it go. Except as he walks away with mother, in the back hall, he says, "She was out with a boy. We're going to have to find her a marriage soon."

Nunoe goes in to talk with Yukie. She says it was a wonderful movie, and shows her the tickets for Morocco. About a desert that goes on forever, and ... they showed clips from the movie. The older sister shows up briefly. Yukie reveals her dream of going far away, like to Morocco.

Next, Nunoe is in the garden in the evening. She steps into the boys' room, where they are coloring devil masks for the obon festival. She says they are scary, and the boys tell her they are pictures of Father!

Today's episode ended with her debating whether to go or not. She says she's not really interesting in dancing, or in winning that ramone...

It seems as if we're getting a concentrated dose of background. Kind of interesting that most of today's episode was very straight-forward acting, no ghosts and goblins involved. But will Nunoe fight back or not? And what will give her the oomph to perform at the festival and win that ramone? Stay tuned...
