aka an old maid at 28?
A very short -- less than a minute -- medley of short clips from the last three days. Then the theme.
And Fumie is making faces. Pull back and show us the friend with a baby! It's Showa 35, and Fumie is 28 years old. Then the other two friends from the sewing class show up, and everyone is talking about married life and children. Fumie, aren't you married yet? The voiceover explains that most women got married at 20, and if you weren't married by 28, you were an old maid.
Father has gotten into politics. Posters on the fences...
Sister-in-law is visiting, very pregnant. She and mother are making tea for a political meeting. Fumie offers to take the tea in. One of the men visiting her father asks if this is his wife, and when he says no, my daughter, they comment on how good it is for married children to help out... and father says no, not married yet. Then they joke about how having a daughter stay at the house is good.
Fumie makes up fancy sake bottles for a wedding, and brother jokes about it.
Telephone call -- Can Fumie help friend with new ramen store? She asks brother, and he says sure, not very busy today.
So Fumie goes. Crowd pouring in, for Star Ramen (new instant ramen). She's worried, but the lady says sure, anybody can do it. Just pour boiling water, cover, then serve. Try it. And at 35 yen for a package, it's cheap. All you have to do is sell it.
At home, Genbee (father) wonders where Fumie is. Mother and brother explain that she's helping with ramen. He is concerned, saying that selling is different, and he's worried that Fumie may embarrass herself.
And back at the Star Ramen show, the lady drags her in and says, Here, you can get service here. Instant pushy crowd, and Fumie is nervous. So she's knocking things down, splashing the customers, and a little boy tries to swipe a package. She knocks a box over trying to chase him.
Then the lady straightens things up, and jokes with the crowd about old maids...
to be continued...
Aha! So Fumie is feeling a lot of pressure to get married. And she's thinking getting married will make things easier?
