mbarkeraka bitter?
Fumie is cleaning up the sales room, complete with flashbacks of being clumsy. Her friend brings her a bag, with some free ramen samples, and then... her pay for the day. Fumie tries to argue, saying that she made so many mistakes, but her friend says everyone makes mistakes. Then her friend offers her some of the new instant coffee, and mixes it up. Fumie asks what is she going to do, wondering who will marry a 28 year old. They try the coffee, and make faces. Bitter.
Theme.
Fumie is walking home. The neighbors congratulate her, and she wonders what they are talking about. Then she gets home -- father has bought a brand-new electric refrigerator and washing machine from one of her brothers. The little sister says they should buy a TV, too. Father says no, radio and newspaper is enough. But the refrigerator and washing machine will help Fumie.
Fumie goes into the shop, where her brother is fussing over some papers. She tries to give him the ramen, and he says sure, whatever.
Finally Fumie lays the ramen on the shrine, and talks to Grandmother's picture. She tells her about the new refrigerator and washing machine, and wonders whether there really is a destiny for her.
Father and mother talk about whether Fumie is a daughter or a bride, and the conflict between the two roles.
Yukie (older sister) drops in. Father and mother are sitting at the table, looking at a picture. Father says, "Come here, Fumie." Then he shows her the picture, of a young man on a bicycle, and asks if she wants to meet him. Miai? Would you like to? He explains that the young man is 38 years old. He lives in Tokyo, which is a long way away. And during the war, he lost his left arm. Fumie asks what kind of work he does, and Father explains that he makes manga. His real name is (I missed it) but he writes under the name Mizuki Shigeru.
Fumie looks at the picture, and says he has a gentle face. Then she thinks about, and says she would like to meet him.
Fumie is sewing, and wonders what kind of a person he is.
Father is looking at the picture. Mother asks wouldn't someone who lives closer be better? Father says it's settled.
Fumie and her friend are at some kind of celebration at the school, with the students serving. They're talking about the miai meeting. Someone gets on the intercom and announces that Fumie Iida should go home right away. Fumie apologizes, and runs off...
