OK, I looked up the names. Shuhei Murai is the father of the artist, Kinuyo Murai is the mother, and Shigeru Murai is the artist. There's also two brothers in the family, Yuichi and Mitsuo.
Today's episode started with Shuhei Murai (the father) and Kinuyo Murai (the mother) leaving their house in the morning, carrying the Boston bag. A neighbor sees them, and asks where they are going. Shuhei says Tokyo, and explains that they are going to see his son, Shigeru, who draws manga. There's a bit of talk -- I think the mother said he's drawn 10s of books, and father added but none are published yet. There's a brief shot of Shigeru working on a drawing in a rather run down apartment. And mother fussing at father about you didn't have to mention that he hasn't been published...
Theme
Shigeru (artist) stomach growling. He looks at an envelope with very little money in it, then pokes around in his kitchen and finds a box of cookies -- there's one left. He dips it in water, and eats it.
Mother and father walk by a vegetable store, and look at sweet potatoes for 50 yen. Mother picks one up, and berates the storekeeper -- expensive! She wouldn't buy that scrawny sweet potato for 10 yen!
Shigeru is drawing, imagining the war... and the banging, and people yelling his name, and... looks up and realizes that Shuhei (father) and Kinuyo (mother) are standing there. Oh, what are you doing here? We banged on the door, but you didn't answer. We came to visit, and bring you these sweet potatoes -- he grabs one and eats it. And there's this picture, wouldn't you like to meet her? Shigeru shakes a tea can, and apologizes, there's no tea left. And he says it is really too early for him to get married. Mother gets angry, and asks him just how old he thinks he is? He says he really needs to work, and they have an argument. Mother says that she will sit there as long as it takes for him to agree to go to the wedding interview. One week, two week's, catch a cold, I'll wait. Shigeru says, oh, OK.
Shuhei and Kinuyo are in the street, going to stay with one of the brothers. Shuhei suggests that he saw in the newspaper that they have a kabuki show, and maybe they could go... mother explodes. (Somewhere in here, I think Shuhei was quoting Shakespeare)
Shigeru is drawing, eating sweet potatoes. Flashback to coming off the train, with his arm missing, and meeting mother and father. I'm back. Then at the house, with two brothers, eating sweet potatoes, and talking to them about drawing. They have a card that he sent after he lost his arm, with an army figure grabbing an empty sleeve.
Shigeru digging in his closet, dragging false arm out. Then looking at picture and wondering what she is like.
Meanwhile, Fumie is reading manga. Her brother brings in a pile of manga magazines, borrowed from someone. They dig through them, looking for Shigeru's work. Which ones are his?
And a clip of the artist busily working again. Voice over says they won't find his work yet...
