a.k.a. worries and preparations
The sister-in-law (very pregnant) and Fumie are sitting by the river singing. They laugh, and the sister-in-law said she wants to meet someone who draws manga. Fumie seems hesitant, and the sister-in-law asks whether she doesn't want to have the wedding interview?
Break for the theme
Repeat the question, and Fumie says no, she wants to have the wedding interview but getting married to someone she doesn't know, going to a place that she doesn't know, can I really do that? How can you tell in such a short meeting what the person will be like?
The sister-in-law reflects that when she got married, she really wasn't sure. But every day, slowly, she has learned about the person she married.
Then she says it's cold, and Fumie says we should go home. But the sister-in-law suddenly has stomach cramps. Fumie asks if it's the baby, and the sister-in-law says maybe. But it's a month early!
Fumie runs up the bank, and grabs an old man with his cart. They load the sister-in-law on, and Fumie pushes. She urges the old man to go smoothly, but quickly.
The voiceover tells us that the sister-in-law's second child was born, a girl. We see Fumie sitting beside the sister-in-law who is sleeping under a futon. Fumie is knitting pink booties. The sister-in-law wakes up, and laughs at the booties. She laughs about Fumie pushing the old man, too, and the sweat pouring down his face. Then the sister-in-law reassures Fumie that she will be fine married. She has confidence.
Father and mother making faces at the baby girl...
Meanwhile, Shigeru (the artist) goes to a pawn shop to get black leather shoes for the miai. He talks to the owner about getting a suit, too, and the owner congratulates him on miai -- but does not give him a suit. No money...
In his house, he has the shoes and his false arm. His brother is visiting, and Shigeru explains that the pawn shop owner would not loan him a suit. He did get a tie. Brother unpacks a package -- he has brought one of his suits to loan Shigeru. But he wonders why Shigeru is going to the miai. Shigeru explains that mother said she would sit here until I promised to go (complete with a flashback). The brother nods, he can imagine. Is there anything else I can do? Shigeru says no, you've done enough. Then he hangs the suit on a hanger with the tie. Oh! Uh, could you loan me a white shirt, too?
Shigeru is drawing frantically up to the last minute.
Shigeru is sleeping on the train. The conductor starts to shake him, and is surprised by his false arm.
Mother is brushing out the suit, commenting on what a nice suit it is. Then she sees the initials inside, and says, "Oh, it's your brother's."
Shigeru is eating a senbai (Japanese rice cracker) with crunches. Father says you should eat more quietly, and Shigeru says the crunch is part of the fun. So father tries it, but admits defeat in making such good crunches. He laughs with Shigeru, but now Mother is angry. And starts giving him advice, about just when the wedding will be! Miai is Jan. 25, wedding will be a week later. Father says she has already reserved the wedding hall.
Fumie with a radish face pack, wondering what kind of man he is...
