a.k.a. miai at last!
Fumie's brother is cleaning the shop front. The neighbor says good morning, and they talk about today being the day for the miai (wedding interview).
Meanwhile, Fumie is inside carrying a bucket with flowers, and a little boy charges up behind her, knocking her over. We see her reach for the edge of the door...
Cut to the theme.
Genbee (father) is standing, letting Miyako (mother) put his formal clothing on him. He's got hakama (the wide trousers) and a fancy top (I don't know what it is called). He looks very serious, and explains that he will sit here, Fumie beside him, and Miyako, you sit a little apart so that she doesn't look so tall. We hear someone crying...
Genbee and Miyako find Fumie comforting the little boy, with the flowers (and water) on the floor. Father looks at this, and starts yelling about her not being dressed up yet -- go get dressed. She goes down the hall, leaving wet footprints. Father looks at these and says they're really big. Miyako, sit very far over!
Next we see Fumie in her kimono sitting in front of the household shrine holding the hairpin from grandmother. There's a flashback of grandmother giving her the hairpin. Fumie asks the shrine for good destiny.
Genbee roars in, yelling what are you doing? Then he goes over the directions. Come in when I cough is the key one. And mother says I think they're here. Father runs off, and Fumie surprises herself by being nervous.
In the street, an old-style taxi pulls up, and the Murai family gets out (Shuhei father, Kinuyo mother, Shigeru artist). I should stop and point out that this is a old-style village, with what looks like a dirt road between the houses. So arriving in a taxi is pretty fancy. Shuhei, Kinuyo, and Shigeru are looking at the house/shop, and mother is giving directions. She tells Shigeru not to talk too much. Father says mother knows all. She does say Shigeru looks good today (in his brother's suit and shirt). This is where Shigeru gets his glasses out, looks at the store, and says "Oh, a sake shop."
The matchmaker turns up, and greets them.
Inside, Fumie is getting teacups out. She hears the voices outside. Then jumps when her sister-in-law says something behind her. The sister asks if she is all right, and Fumie admits that she is nervous.
The four parents, Shigeru, and the matchmaker are seated on cushions around a nice room. The walls are sliding doors, but good quality. Behind the Murai family, there is a flower arrangement. One wall has a beautiful wooden carving in the corner. The matchmaker introduces everyone.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen Fumie is mixing green tea.
Shuhei talks with Genbee about kids fighting. Genbee says when he was young, he fought with his brothers. Shuhei says that Shigeru was always fighting with his brothers. They're laughing, but Kinuyo is coughing into her hand, trying to get Shuhei to shut up.
Fumie carries a tray with tea and snack to the door, and waits. She is trying to decide if she is late or not. Inside, father starts to cough into his hand to get her in, when Shuhei asks a question about the house. Father explains, and Shuhei gets into a historic comparison that your ancestors and ours were on different sides, and must have fought. So Shigeru and your daughter are like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet! He laughs theatrically, and mother coughs again.
While the fathers are laughing together, Fumie slides the door open just a little and peeks through. "Oh, that's him." And he sees the eye in the crack in the door. Meanwhile, the little boy is sneaking up behind Fumie to steal the snack off her tray.
Father finally coughs. And nothing happens. He coughs again. Nothing. Shuhei asks if he has a cold. Oh, no, no. Father excuses himself and steps through the door. "Where is Fumie?" And she backs in, tugging on the snack that the little boy is holding, telling him that it is for the guests. Father says "I coughed!"
Fumie comes in, and her mother serves Shigeru the tea and snack. The matchmaker introduces her. Shigeru tells himself, "oh, that was the eye in the doorway."
Shigeru picks up the tea with one hand and starts to drink. His father immediately apologizes for his bad manners, explaining that in the war he lost his left arm. Everyone assures him that they understand. Shigeru drinks some of the tea, and announces that it is delicious.
Now they bring in food on little tables for everyone. Genbee gets up and starts to pour sake for Shuhei, who says, "No, no. I never drink." Genbee looks puzzled, and starts to pour for Shigeru. "No, he doesn't drink either. But please, do enjoy it yourself." Genbee ends up stuck in the middle, clearly not sure what to do next. He tells mother to get them some tea. There is an awkward silence.
Shigeru looks at the food, and announces, "It looks very tasty. Let's eat!" And picks up the chopsticks as everyone relaxes a bit.
Then he looks at Fumie and says, "can I ask one question?" She says yes, and he says, "Do you ride a bicycle?" She looks puzzled, and he says, "You know, a bicycle with pedals." She says yes, in fact, she delivers sake with one. He says that's good.
The voiceover told us that Fumie relaxed a little...
To be continued
The good news is that we've at least started the miai! Whoosh, almost two and a half weeks to get from the intro bit (which was the taxi and family in the street) to today?
