Who's worried? Not me...

Today's cast of characters:
The Iida family (the girl who will become the wife):
Genbee (father -- always yelling!)
Miyako (mother -- quiet)
Fumie (the girl who will become the wife -- too tall?)
Yukie (the 2nd daughter, who wanted to go to Morocco, and everyone says is a beauty)

The Murai family (the artist who draws manga)
Shuhei (father -- reading the newspaper)
Kinuyo (mother -- organizer, in charge, and often upset with the men)
Shigeru (the artist --- always drawing)

Matchmaker -- a man, well-dressed and formal in speech

Miyako and Fumie are walking quickly outside their house. Their hands are full of packages in furoshiki (Japanese cotton squares of cloth that used to be used as shopping bags or otherwise to carry things -- just put something in the middle, fold the sides up, tie the ends together, and you have a package). The friendly neighbors say good morning, and congratulate on the miai. And you've been shopping. Miyako says, yes, we're hurrying, the wedding is going to be on the 30th. The neighbor counts on his fingers -- 4 days!

Inside, Miyako and Fumie have the packages scattered on the floor. Genbee brings in an old-fashioned case (woven bamboo, like a big box). Miyako is worrying about dishes, and Genbee says relax, they certainly have such things in Tokyo. Then he looks stunned, and starts talking about pans, mumbling that the artist has a man's house, he probably doesn't have pans.

And Yukie walks in. Fumie greets her, Yukie has a big smile, and pulls out zabuton covers, a present for the new bride. Zabuton are the cushions you sit on the floor with, these are covers for those. And Fumie says, "Dan dan." (Thankyou, local dialect)

Cut to the theme.

A very short bit, shot in the entry way of the Murai house, with Shuhei, Kinuyo, and Shigeru formally asking the matchmaker to make the proposal, and him accepting the task.

Then the matchmaker in the Iida house, sitting across from Shuhei, Fumie, and Miyako. He is formally making the proposal. There is a paper that Fumie looks at, passes to Shuhei, he scans, and then makes the formal acceptance, which Fumie repeats. This is the formal proposal, on the 28th.

Meanwhile, someone is crossing out items on a list. The camera pulls back, and we see that this is Kinuyo, Shigeru's mother. She asks Shuhei (who is sitting, reading his newspaper) about something, and he answers. She frets that he should have told her before, and what are you doing reading, why don't you help me? He tells his newspaper that "You're doing plenty of worrying for both of us." Kinuyo stands up, and says, "What is Shigeru doing, anyway?" Shuhei answers, "He's thinking." She bustles out of the room, and Shuhei reads something aloud from the newspaper.

Shigure looks at a magazine, thumbing through it. Then he sets it down, and lays back to think. Kinuyo comes in, and says, "You call that working? I should have known you were sleeping." Shigeru rolls over, and says, "It's noisy in here. I was thinking."

Kinuyo sets her handful down. "New socks, and underwear. It's important to have clean underwear. I don't want you embarrassed." Then she notices that his toe is sticking out of a small hole in the sock he is wearing. "Give me that, and I'll darn it." Shigeru turns away, and says, "No, it would be cold without my sock."

Kinuyo gets up and brings a large tin case out of a corner. Shigeru looks at it, then opens it. He is surprised to find his old pictures. "I painted these, and you kept them all?" "When you weren't fighting or avoiding your studies." He shifts through them, showing us landscapes, faces... and pulls out a painting with monsters. "I remember, I saw that play..." Kinuyo shakes her head, "You liked that stuff."

Shigeru turns around and starts sketching. He is mumbling to himself. Mother tries to get his attention, but he is focused...

And, back at the Iida house, Fumie is in her room. Miyako comes in, carrying a kimono wrapping (traditional paper). Miyako asks Fumie, "Is this really okay? Tokyo... I never expected you to go so far away. Somehow I thought you'd be close. You've helped so much. Do you think if we had found you a married sooner, you might be closer?" She's babbling, and finally says, "Oh, don't mind me. It's just a mother's mouth." Then she unwraps the kimono. It's a pink kimono, hand-sewn. She says she has sold so many, but she kept this one for Fumie. Fumie tells her not to worry, just take care of yourself and be healthy.

To be continued...

I think the key thing that today was supposed to show was how the entire Iida family is worrying about Fumie going (although she seems pretty calm, actually). While in the Murai family, the mother is the only one who seems to be worrying about the wedding, both Shuhei (with his newspaper) and Shigeru (busily sketching) are letting her do the worrying.
