aka a thief in the marketplace?
[I'm way behind, so these may be a bit sketchy.]
This episode began with Fumie's eye peeking through the workroom doors. Then she slid them open and quietly peeked over Shigeru's shoulder. She saw a one-eyed monster, and jumped. As she stepped back toward the door, Shigeru turned and looked at her. "What do you want?"
Run the theme -- this time was the longer theme, that includes a little bit of the two of them riding bicycles, followed by manga style ghost, man in a top hat, little group of monsters.
Shigeru was in the kitchen/living/everything room at a small, round table drawing a map. He said, "You can go by yourself. If you get lost, ask anyone, everyone knows Suzuran shotengai (shopping center)." He handed Fumie the map, and she started tracing the route. She said, "How long does it take?" and looked up... just as the doors slid shut behind him.
Fumie was in her coat, looking around the kitchen for a shopping bag or basket. At this time, everyone carried their own shopping basket. She picked an army-style bag off the wall, and looked at the shut doors and said quietly, "I'm borrowing this."
Next, Fumie walked down the road -- graveled ruts in a dirt road, really -- looking at the fields. She said to herself, "Where is a shopping center? There's nothing here." Then she remembered the monsters Shigeru was drawing (flashback) and asked herself, "What is that?" She shivered, and walked on.
There were a group of stores, with a PA system playing music and announcements. Fumie found a vegetable shop, and looked at the vegetables. Daikon (white radish) was 50 yen. She said, "Expensive!" The shopkeeper pulled that sign off, put on a sign saying limited time special price sale -- 15 yen! -- and started announcing the sale. As Fumie started figuring out dinner out loud, the crowd pushed past and bought all the daikon.
Fumie next found the fish shop. She looked at shijimi (clams) and told the shopkeeper, "They're very small, aren't they?" He assured her they are ordinary size, and while she's getting out her money, the crowd buys them all.
Next, Fumie stopped at a basket shop. She was looking at the shopping baskets, and set her purse down. A bad guy, complete with sunglasses, picked it up and started to walk off. Another woman said, "Isn't that your purse?" Fumie yelled, "Thief!" and chased him as he ran.
Around a corner, a woman with a backpack and large bundles in both hands heard Fumie chasing the thief. She waited, and when the man turned the corner, she blocked him. Then she set one bundle on the ground and let him trip over it, grabbing the purse as he falls. She handed it to Fumie, who thanked her. Then Fumie realized that she had run away from the basket shop with a shopping basket in her hands without paying for it. The woman urged her to hurry back, or they will think you are a thief, too. Fumie said, "I'll be right back." She ran off. And the thief picked up the bundle that he had tripped over and started to run off with it.
Fumie apologized to the basket storekeeper, then raced back. But the street is empty.
That evening, Shigeru and Fumie were eating dinner. Shigeru said, "Well, at least nothing was taken." Fumie agreed, but wondered who the woman was that helped. She described the backpack and bundles. Shigeru was eating happily, and Fumie asked, "How is it?" He said it was very good. She said, "I don't really know what you like, yet." He said, "Well, actually, I'll eat anything."
Fumie wondered if she should introduce herself to the neighbors. Shigeru said not to worry about it, then noticed... "My bag! You put spring onions in my bag? That's my manga bag, that I deliver drawings in. Oh, no, it smells..." Fumie said she would wash it, right away.
The clock chimed, and Shigeru looked at it. "That late? I need to get back to work."
Fumie asked, "When will you be done?" Shigeru shook his head, "I don't know. I lost a week." and ducked back into his workroom, shutting the doors. Fumie muttered to herself, "Lost a week? What about getting married?" She started to make tea, then realized that she had forgotten to buy any.
Later, as the faucet dripped in the sink, Fumie was falling asleep over the table. The clock chimed midnight, and she roused enough to realize that Shigeru was still working.
In his workroom, Shigeru was inking pages. He finished one, and set it aside, saying, "One more." He counted the pages near him, and sighed. "Only three more to go." Then he sneezed. He poked at the ashes and sand near his desk, and mumbled, "Nothing left to burn." Then he dragged a blanket out of his closet and wrapped it around himself, draping it over his head. And started to ink another page.
Meanwhile, Fumie was talking to Grandma's picture. "Well, my husband is working." She started to fold a paper crane. There was a flashback to Shigeru saying "I lost a week." She said, "What about our marriage?" Then she starts singing There's no place like home. The voice over told us she was feeling lonely. But Fumie said, "No, cheer up. You can do this." She finished the paper crane and set it beside the picture.
To be continued.
