a.k.a. Goethe saves the day?

This episode started with Fumie showing Shigeru a box of newsletters in envelopes, and asking, "What should we do?" Shigeru said, "Stop, I guess." He looked at the model kit again and muttered, "They're not selling. That guy!" He got up and started into his room. "I guess it's back to work for me..."

They ran the theme...

Shigeru sat in his room, thinking. There was a flashback to the publisher's secretary telling them that the model kits weren't selling.

Fumie was looking at the kitchen. Shigeru came out of his room with a long white banner. He had written in bold black letters on the banner something. "Can you help me put these up?" He went back into his room, and Fumie followed.

He raised it up on the wall, and said I want to hang it here. The sunshine showed that this was several manga pages glued or taped together. Fumie said, "But what is it?" Shigeru read it to her, and said, "It's Goethe! Look there." On the floor, he had two other banners, all with quotes from Goethe.

Then he sat down at his work table and said, "Here, look. This is Goethe." He thumbed through a well-worn paperback. "I carried these in the war. He gave me power and confidence. You should read them." He handed her the paperback, and got out two more volumes. She started to look at the first one, and then gave it back. "I can't read this. It's too hard." He pushed the books back into her hand. "Yes you can." She took the books to read.

Later, at the shopping center, Fumie mailed a stack of newsletters. Then she went to the bookstore. The young teenager (Koboyashi Taichi -- let's call him Taichi) who liked the Kitaro books was helping. The owner invited Fumie to eat, and had Fumie and Taichi sit down with Kiyo (the old woman, her mother-in-law). She said this fried chicken and potato salad was the best seller when she ran a restaurant. Fumie tried it, and said it's excellent. Then Fumie asked what Taichi was doing working at the bookstore. Kiyo said Michiko grabbed him. He shrugged, and said, "Well, there's not much to do on Saturday, and there's good food, so..." Michiko said, "Oh, I checked on that book. The publisher said it's not coming. What was it called?" Taichi said, "Kitaro." Fumie said, "Hakaba no kitaro?" Michiko said, "Yes, that's it. Are you an expert on manga?" Fumie said, "No, no. I just knew that one."

Later, in the store, Taichi was putting up a light, talking to Michiko. Kiyo told Fumie, "She's got him talking. It's a cheap salary, but a rental bookstore is like a game for the teenagers, a meeting place. And she's introducing him to people..."

Next, at the publisher's office, Tomita, the publisher, was stuffing a wad of paper back in an envelope. He told his secretary, "That was such a thick letter, I thought it must be money. It was somebody wanting Kitaro, again." She frowned, and said, "Look at these!" She held up a stack of letters and cards. "They're all asking for the next Kitaro." He stood up and looked out the window. Then he said, "But I'm a war publisher."

Fumie was watering the garden when Shigeru came running down the street.

He gulped a glass of water, then said, "They want Kitaro again!" He explained... (and they did a flashback to Kitaro talking to the publisher).

Tomita looked out the window and said, "The war stories aren't growing." Shigeru said, "Well, why don't you let me do Kitaro again?" The publisher stared out the window and said, "Can you? Your stories are so dark." Shigeru said, "Kitaro is different. And the next story is..." The publisher listened to Shigeru giving reasons to do Kitaro, then said, "Let's try it." Shigeru continued to argue for a moment, then said, "Wait, what did you say?" The publisher turned towards him, and said, "Let's try one more. You need to understand, if it fails, we'll stop. This is the last chance." Shigeru nodded. The publisher picked up a stack of letters and cards from his desk and handed them to Shigeru. "Oh, you should take a look at these, too."

Fumie looked at Shigeru across the kitchen table. "So, you're going to do Kitaro again." She looked at the letters and cards. "So many letters..." Shigeru stood up, and said, "Well, I've got to get to work." He went into his room.

Fumie looked at the banners of Goethe quotes. She repeated one phrase from the banners, about good opportunities. (Maybe seize good fortune?)

The episode ended with Shigeru sketching a large face, with one eye (Kitaro always is shown with only one eye).
