mbarkeraka all's well that ends...not yet?
Michiko, the bookstore owner, sobbed into her apron. Taichi watched her. She said, "I just wanted to worry about someone who is alive." She wiped her face, and said, "I'm sorry. I wanted to act like a parent. But that's not fair to you." Kiyo half-laughed. "Actually, I thought of you as my grandson."
Shigeru said, "I think the drawings are almost finished. Your's will be the last."
The theme ran...
Shigeru drew a boat, with two kappa eating watermelon. He said, "When I was growing up, they told me we had kappa in the back. I think they're fun." Taichi said, "My grandmother always talked about kappa, too." Inui asked, "Where are you from?" Taichi said, "Oh, way back in the country. Iwasa. You probably haven't heard of it." Inui said, "No, I think I have. Nice place, isn't it?" Taichi said, "It's pretty country, and I liked living there, but there's no work." Then he looked at Shigeru and said, "When I read your books, they remind me of my grandmother telling me stories. Scary, but nostalgic. I really enjoy them. They're fun, too, they make me laugh." He glanced at the store. "This store... I've really made a wreck of things. I'm sorry." His face twisted, in the way that young men who are trying not to cry will do. Then he looked at Shigeru and bowed. "Thank you so much."
Genbee watched.
Shigeru stood. "Well... making manga is hard, too. But... sometimes you just have to keep going." He smiled at Taichi, who slowly returned the smile.
Michiko said, "Well! If you want, come inside, we've got amazake (sweet sake)."
A little later, Genbee stood in the store, reading the Kitaro book. Michiko came from the back, and said, "Oh, I'm sorry that you got mixed up in all that." Genbee said, "No, I need to apologize for yelling." He looked thoughtful. "Actually, I learned a lot. I think I understand better now." He sat down, and Michiko joined him at the table in the store. "I just... I was worried about Fumie. But I think she's going to be a good wife." Michiko looked at the book in his hand, and said, "Please, take the book with you." Genbee said, "But what about your store?" "Oh, we have plenty of copies. Take that one." Genbee said, "Thank you."
Fumie came from the back of the store. "Genbee? When do you need to leave?" Genbee looked at his watch, and said, "Is it really that late?" Shigeru came out, and Genbee said, "Shigeru, I'm glad I met you." Shigeru said, "Maybe on your next trip, we can talk some more." Genbee lifted the book, and said, "I'm going to read this. It looks interesting."
Fumie walked with Genbee through the shopping center. "Are you sure I don't need to take you to Tokyo station?" Genbee said, "No, I can get there." He paused for a moment, and said, "Ganbare." (Keep fighting or keep struggling? Very common Japanese phrase urging to keep on going in sports, business, etc.) Then he said, "In life, there are good times and bad times. Anybody can handle the good times, but the bad times are what show a person's real character." Then he pulled a small wrapped wad of money out of his pocket and handed it to Fumie. "Buy some cosmetics or something. And, uh, we won't tell your mother, okay? Do write to her, though." Fumie took the money, and then said, "Thanks. But Genbee... we don't have much money, but I laugh every day." Genbee smiled.
Back at the store, Kiyo, the old woman, was almost napping at the counter. Taichi was reading the new Kitaro book in the kitchen. Michiko was mixing something at the kitchen sink. "So, do you want meatballs or hamburger?" Taichi grunted. Michiko looked at him, and walked closer. Then she said, "Do you want meatballs or hamburger?" He continued reading, and said, "Whichever." She said, "Unbelievable." He looked up and said, "Really, whichever you make is tasty. They're both good." She smiled and returned to her preparations, while he went back to reading.
At the Iida house, Genbee watched as Izumi, Fumie's younger sister, looked at the Kitaro book. She said, "It looks scary. I don't know if I want to read it." Genbee said, "No, read it. It's funny, too." Miyako, Fumie's mother, asked, "So how did it go?" Genbee said, "Oh, the sake dealer was very..." Miyako said, "No, Fumie! Is she healthy?" Genbee said, "Yes." Miyako said, "That's good. How about their house?" Genbee looked thoughtful. "Well, it's a little small. It's not in Tokyo, it's out in the fields." Miyako said, "Oh, doesn't that make shopping hard?" Genbee said, "No, actually, there's a very nice shopping center nearby. And when we were there, everyone knew Fumie and was very friendly." Miyako smiled. "So she's made friends already? That's good. What about New Year's?"
Genbee looked puzzled. "New Year's?" Miyako shook her head. "Is she coming back? It will be one year since their wedding." Genbee bit his lip. "Well, actually, I don't think so."
A brother came in, and Genbee suggested "Maybe another time." Miyako said, "Well, I could fix some kimono for them, if that would help." Genbee shook his head. "No, their life is different. We need to leave them alone." Miyako said, "Well, I worry about them." Genbee said, "Actually, I do too. But... he makes her laugh."
Later that year, in the bookstore, there were four volumes of Kitaro out. Shigeru and Fumie had done some work on the house. That morning, in the entry way, Shigeru adjusted his army bag. "I'm off to talk to the publisher." Fumie said, "It's good that you've got such a good relationship. Maybe you should bring him out here sometime for dinner. Some good country cooking..." Shigeru said, "That sounds good. I may be late today though. We're going to talk about the new series. I've got an idea up here." He tapped his head. Fumie said, "Please don't be too late." Shigeru said, "Oh, yeah, there is supposed to be snow tonight." Fumie said, "Yes, that too, but... we've been married one year. I'm going to make a special dinner." Shigeru looked surprised.
Today's episode ended with a medley of upcoming bits -- Fumie announcing that she wants to work, a hairdresser or similar telling her that she isn't any good, a cute young girl announcing that she left home to work with Shigeru, Fumie saying just talk to me, and Fumie announcing that she can do things, too.
