a.k.a. falling down

Fumie was talking to Michiko, Kiyo, and Taichi about Shigeru's fascination with models. Kiyo asked, "So he isn't working any more?" Fumie said, "No, actually, he is still working hard. But he spends so much time and money on these models. I just don't understand..."

Michiko's husband walked in. "I understand it." He glanced around the room, saw Aiko, the baby, and paused. Michiko said, "That's Aiko. She's ten months old now." Kiyo said, "But what were you saying about understanding?" He shrugged. "Look, when you're cold, wet, you don't know whether you are going to live until tomorrow, you learn to enjoy what you can today. That's all." Michiko said, "I see. So you think it's okay?" He nodded. "What about dinner?" Michiko started to get up, and Aiko began crying. Fumie picked her up and rocked her. As she cried, Michiko's husband rushed out.

Later, Aiko was sleeping again. Fumie said, "I'm sorry she interrupted dinner." Michiko said, "Oh, it's no problem." "But your husband ran away..." Michiko looked at the sleeping baby. "It's just hard for him to see your baby."

Someone yelled in the store, "Isn't there anybody here?" Michiko rushed out, where an angry lady held up a copy of Devil Boy and shook it at her. "What's this? He was reading it, but it's yours, isn't it?" She waved at a young boy standing crying into his fists behind her. She shook the book again. "We told you not to give books to kids!" Michiko started to say, "What..." The woman interrupted, "You stood here and agreed, and then you give him this?"

Kiyo pushed past Michiko and said, "Your child borrowed the book, we didn't force it on him. If you don't want him borrowing our books, keep him out of the store."

The woman sneered. "Where do you get this terrible trash, with magic and devils?" She tossed the book on the table.

Taichi squeezed past Michiko and Kiyo. He said, "Have you read it? I've read it 10 times, and there's nothing wrong with it."

The woman glared at him. "I don't need to read trash to know what it is. And I certainly don't want my son hanging around the kind of person that reads this trash."

Michiko said, "I think you can leave." The woman turned to her. "What do you mean?" "You come into my store, insult my customers, and throw my book around. We don't need you here." The woman glared. "Well, this is a terrible store..."

From the other room, Aiko cried. Fumie turned and ran back. Fumie found Aiko on the floor near the stairs. She picked her up as Michiko's husband ran down the stairs, and Michiko, Kiyo, and Taichi gathered around her. Fumie ran her hand over Aiko's head. Michiko's husband said, "Did she fall down? Should we call an ambulance?" Fumie shook her head. "No, I think she's okay."

The woman in the store called out, "Isn't anyone going to listen to me?"

Michiko's husband stepped around the others, and looked into the store. He said, "You're noisy. Get out of here and go home."

A little later, Michiko, Kiyo, and Fumie sat in the dining room. Aiko slept quietly nearby. Fumie said, "Your husband was so worried about Aiko." Michiko said, "Well, yes..." Kiyo sighed. "Our baby was about Aiko's age. When... it was during the war, and babies died." Michiko said, "Yes, and then he didn't come back for three and a half years."

The three shop wives boiled in to the room. "We just heard!" "Aiko fell?" "Is everything okay?" "Oh, there's Aiko." They all three clustered around the sleeping baby, exclaiming, "Oh, she's so cute!" Kiyo shook her head and grumbled, "You're so noisy, I don't know how she can sleep."

When Fumie and Aiko returned home, Fumie was surprised to see an extra pair of shoes in the entryway. "Shigeru's brother?"

She went into the kitchen. Shigeru's brother was sprawled on the floor. Fumie said, "Oh, hi. Isn't your wife here?" He shook his head. "No, not today. I'm not here for a bath, just a... a little advice." Fumie said, "Let me put Aiko upstairs." She took the baby upstairs.

When she came back downstairs, Shigeru's brother explained. Fumie said, "What? You lost your job? But I thought you said the company was doing well?" Shigeru's brother nodded. "Yes, but you know, they expected a lot. I think I'm better off. I'll find something soon." He rubbed his jaw. "Of course, it might be a little hard for a while." He looked at Shigeru. "Do you think... maybe you could help, a little?" Shigeru nodded, and looked at Fumie. "Don't you think we could help, a little?" Shigeru and his brother chuckled.

Fumie looked at him, then up the stairs. "I think I hear Aiko crying." She got up. Shigeru said, "No, she's not crying." Fumie said, "Yes, I'm sure she is." She ran up the stairs.

Fumie stomped into the room upstairs. Shigeru followed and closed the door. Fumie whirled around and looked at him. "I understand that your brother is going to have hard times, but what about Aiko?" Shigeru frowned. "He's got two children. And we have money. I'll write the second Devil Boy book, we'll have more money." Fumie shook her head.

Shigeru's brother strode out of the house. He turned back to Shigeru and Fumie, standing in the yard, and raised an envelope in his hand. "Thanks! This will help a lot. And as soon as I can, I'll pay you back." Shigeru said, "Oh, sure. Just take care of your family. Family is what's important." Shigeru's brother slipped the envelope into his coat, and walked off.

Shigeru looked at Fumie. "Well, I guess I better get back to work, finish writing the second book."

Days later, as Shigeru slipped his army bag with the draft of the second book over his shoulder, Fumie's voice came from the entryway. "He was just leaving." Fumie came in, followed by Inui. Shigeru said, "I was just about to visit you."

Inui knelt on the floor, and dropped his head. "I'm so sorry. We have to stop Devil Boy."

Shigeru, Inui, and Fumie sat around the table, with the draft of the second Devil Boy book sitting between them. Inui shook his head. "I'm ruined. There have been 2,300 copies returned. The company will go bankrupt." Shigeru said, "But what about the money they owe you?" "It won't be enough." Shigeru took a deep breath. "Well, I guess there's nothing to say, really." Inui looked at the draft. "I... uh, the other books in the series? I can't do it, now, of course. This is just a huge failure. What a mess."
