a.k.a. surprise, surprise, surprise

Fumie was hanging clothes on her bamboo clothes line. The mailman called from the gate, "Murai? You've got mail." Fumie thanked him and took the little bundle of letters and cards. She glanced at them and said, "Another one?"

She went inside, where Aiko was playing with wooden blocks and Shigeru was eating sweet potatoes. "Your mother sent another card. She wants us to visit." He frowned. "Tell her when the weather is better." Fumie shook her head and pushed the card across the table to him. "We've already said that. She says the weather is fine right now." Shigeru chewed for a moment, then pushed the card back. "I've got work to do, you answer her." He grabbed another sweet potato and went into his work room.

Shigeru was drawing jidai manga for Inui. In the kitchen, Fumie looked in the large tin container that they kept rice in, sighed, and stirred the thin layer of rice in the bottom with her finger. A small ghost of poverty stood beside her and laughed.

Yuichi, Shigeru's brother, ran in yelling. Shigeru jumped up and said, "What's the matter? Did you lose your job again?" Yuichi shook his head. "Nothing so minor. I got a call from mother." He grabbed Shigeru's shoulders. "The angry woman is coming to visit."

Meanwhile, Kinuyo, Shigeru's mother, was on the phone. Behind her, Shuhei was cutting his toenails over a newspaper. Kinuyo announced to the black handset, "I am going to Tokyo. I want to meet Aiko." She placed the handset down in its cradle, firmly. She turned around. Shuhei shook the newspaper and picked it up. "Maybe we can go early and visit the kabuki theater." She frowned and pointed at the floor. "Look at what you did!" Shuhei looked down, put the newspaper down, and started sweeping up toenail clippings with his hand.

Back in the kitchen, Yuichi, Shigeru, and Fumie sat on the floor. Shigeru groaned, "If she comes to visit, I won't get any work done." Fumie asked, "Will they stay long?" Yuichi shook his head. "Maybe. I'll bet the angry woman plans to." Fumie said, "We don't have any extra futon. Maybe we can borrow some?" Shigeru said, "Maybe they could stay with you, Yuichi?" Yuichi shook his head again. "No way. We don't have enough room, and I don't want the angry woman visiting our house. And feeding the strong stomach? No." They all groaned, and looked up, trying to think what to do.

[Note: Yuichi calls Shigeru and his mother "the anger" and father is "the strong stomach."]

Yuichi suddenly smiled. "Wait. What if Fumie and Aiko went to visit? They could go to our parents first and then visit her parents. The angry woman just wants to see Aiko, so if they go visit, she won't come. Yes! That's the answer."

After Yuichi left, Fumie got her purse out of the drawer and looked in it. She shook her head and told Shigeru, "There's just not enough money. "He said, "Could we borrow some from..." she closed the purse and put it back. "No, that's ridiculous. We're going to have to let your mother visit." He collapsed on the floor, groaning.

Fumie was in the yard, pulling weeds, when a woman called from the gate. "Excuse me, but is this where Mizuki lives?" Fumie stood up. "Yes?" The woman turned and said, "President, this is the place." Fumie walked over and looked out. Fukuzawa, the publisher of Kitaro who had been in the hospital for so long, stood there, smiling.

Inside the house, Fukuzawa, the woman with him, Fumie, and Shigeru sat around the table. Fukuzawa bowed and said, "I'm so sorry that you didn't get your money." Shigeru said, "Please, sit up. You were so sick." Shigeru remembered Fukuzawa collapsing in the street, coughing blood into the snow. Fukuzawa straightened up, then reached into his coat pocket and pulled out an envelope. "Well, I'm still sorry it's late, but here's the money I owe you." Shigeru looked at him and said, "Can you afford it?" Fukuzawa smiled. "Yes, take it. In fact, I want to give you more work. I'm starting a new company." He handed Shigeru the envelope and started going through his pockets. "Now where did I put up my business cards?"

The woman said, "I've got them. Here." She handed him a card case. He opened it, got out one card, and gave it to Shigeru. Shigeru looked at it. "Stormy Star Enterprises?"

Fukuzawa nodded. "And let me introduce Miyako, my executive secretary." She got out a card case, took out a business card, and handed it to Shigeru. Fukuzawa said, "Beautiful, isn't she?" She scrunched her nose at him. He laughed and said, "She was working for a trading company, and I grabbed her." She said, "That's not exactly how it was. I asked." Shigeru said, "Wait a minute. She moved from a trading company to a publishing company? You didn't tell her the truth, did you?" She laughed and said, "The president is a very funny man."

Then she dug into her bag and handed Fukuzawa a book. "Don't forget this." He nodded and turned to Shigeru. "This is my new effort. Ninja comics. We're going to put out one every month. Will you draw for me?" Shigeru said, "Yes, but is there a market?"

Fukuzawa stood up and walked into the workroom. He picked up a copy of the Kitaro books. "The rental manga is finished. Magazine manga, though, that's where the market is." Shigeru said, "Yes, but selling to them is tough." Fukuzawa smiled, "That's why I'm going to make my own. Also, they're aimed at children. I want to make one for young adults, not children." Shigeru nodded. "That could work." Then he smiled. "I'd be happy to draw for you."

Later, after Fukuzawa and Miyako left, Shigeru was reading the ninja comic in his workroom. Fumie picked up the business card that Miyako had put on the table. "That's wonderful." Shigeru looked up. "What?" Fumie looked at the card. "I think that's the first woman I've ever seen with her own business card. It's unusual." Shigeru nodded. "You might be right. Fukuzawa is unusual." He shook his head. "He's got so much energy, and he's going to make another company."

Fumie brought the envelope over and handed it to Shigeru. He pushed it back in her hand. "Take the money for your trip." She said, "But shouldn't we use it for living expenses?" He shook his head. "No, this is extra money." She said, "Why don't you go with us?" He lifted the ninja comic. "I've got too much work to do. I have drawing to do for Inui, and now I need to draw ninja comics, too." She said, "Well, maybe I shouldn't..." Shigeru said, "No, go visit my parents, then your home. Go ahead, take your time."

He straightened up, and there was a long squeal of escaping gas. Shigeru said, "That was a good sound. Maybe from the tanuki dance hall?" Fumie said, "No, that was a wedding sound." Then Shigeru looked thoughtful. "You know, what if there was a ninja who didn't throw an exploding ball and escape in smoke, but just made gas?" Fumie chuckled. "I guess that would be funny." Shigeru nodded. "I think it could be."
