Jul. 28th, 2010 12:05 pma.k.a. it's not all about me?
Kitamura, the Shonen Land assistant, looked at the draft of the new Devil Boy comic. He said, "Wow, this is great. Very powerful." Shigeru smiled. "I think it's good. And the idea that only one in 10,000 children will be tempted..." Kitamura nodded. "That's good. And Mephisto is really scary." Kitamura shuffled the pages, showing an old thin man in a black suit and tophat. Shigeru said, "Having him tempting the boy puts a human face on the devil." Kitamura said, "Toyokawa has been really excited about this. He asked me who was doing it?"
Shigeru scooted his chair closer to Kitamura and leaned over. "Actually, everyone did a little bit. Kurata did the scenic architecture. Komine added shadows and darkness." Kitamura said, "What about Sugai?" Shigeru wrinkled his nose. "Sugai? Well... he did the dots." Kitamura said, "Dots?" Shigeru pulled out a page, and pointed to a face. The shadow was made up of dots. "Here, this kind of dots. He does those really well."
Later, in the family living room, Kitamura held Aiko up in his arms and turned in circles. She squealed, and he set her down. Then she said, "Again!" He knelt, dizzy, and said, "Maybe later." Fumie came in from the kitchen and said, "Thank you very much for bringing Aiko a present." He said, "Oh, it's just some crayons. I hope she likes drawing with them." Izumi, Fumie's sister, joined them. Izumi asked, "Do you like children?" Kitamura smiled at her. "Oh, yes. I really like them. Very much." Fumie thought to herself that he hadn't been particularly interested in Aiko before.
Sugai walked in. He smiled at Izumi. "Could I get some tea for the office?" Then he frowned at Kitamura. "What are you doing here? I thought you had to get those drafts to your office?" Kitamura said, "Oh, I was just leaving." He waved and said, "Goodbye, Aiko." He looked at Izumi as he waved. Aiko and Izumi waved goodbye to him. He backed out of the room, banging his head on the doorway, still waving.
Sugai ask Fumie, "What was he doing here?" Fumie said, "He brought Aiko some crayons. I didn't know he liked children that much." Sugai frowned, and whispered to her, "I think he was here because he's interested in Izumi." Fumie nodded.
Then he rushed into the kitchen and said to Izumi, "Let me help you." He started to set cups on the serving platter.
Fumie looked at him helping Izumi and thought, "Kitamura is not the only person interested in Izumi."
At lunchtime, Kurata, the man from Osaka, Sugai, the clumsy assistant, and Komine, the long-haired man from the temple, sat down at a small table to eat their lunches. Izumi brought tea, and watched as they unwrapped their lunches. Komine had a metal lunchbox inside a cloth wrapper. Inside the lunchbox was a good Japanese lunch, with fried rice, egg, meat, all nicely separated. Izumi said, "That's a really nice bento. Did you fix it yourself?" (Bento is Japanese for a lunch box). Komine smiled, and said, "Well..." Kurata laughed, and said, "Did someone fix it for you?" Komine's smile widened, slightly, and he said, "Well..." Kurata said, "He's very mysterious." Izumi filled Komine's tea cup.
Izumi looked at Sugai and said, "What about you?" He took out a paper bag. Then he opened it, and pulled out three pieces of pastry. Izumi said, "Wait... Curry pan, curry in bread? And anpan, sweet beans in bread?" He nodded. "And... cream pan? Sweet cream in bread?" He nodded. She laughed. "You bought it at the bakery, right? And you like sweets." She filled his tea cup.
Then she looked at Kurata. He had a larger metal lunchbox. It was full of white rice, with one salt plum in the middle. He was rapidly eating the rice. "Just rice?" He nodded, and kept eating. She shrugged, and lifted the tea pot. "Can I pour you some tea?" He shook his head, swallowed, and said, "You don't need to do that. I'd rather do it myself. It helps me stay focused. Just leave the teapot here."
Later, in the kitchen, Izumi asked Fumie, "Do you know if Komine is married? I think someone fixes his lunch." Fumie wiped a plate with a towel. "Actually, I hadn't heard. But... now that you mention it, there was that time in the rain." Izumi said, "What happened?" Fumie said, "We had a sudden rainstorm. No one had brought umbrellas. Komine went outside, and I grabbed an extra umbrella and went out to loan it to him. But..." Izumi said, "What?" Fumie shrugged. "There was a young woman outside with an umbrella. He smiled at her, took the umbrella, and put his arm around her. Then they walked off in the rain together." She shook her head and set the plate down. "That's all I know, really. She's a mystery."
Izumi shook her head. "At least he has a good lunch. I think Kurata makes his own, and it's just rice." Fumie frowned. "That's all?" Izumu nodded. "I think so. Say, what do you think about getting a car?" Fumie said, "What for?" Izumi said, "Well, I can drive, and take you shopping, or meet people at the station." Fumie said, "Well, I'll ask Shigeru."
Later, Fumie was sewing by herself in the kitchen. Shigeru came into the kitchen and said, "Coffee?" Fumie said, "Are you still working?" He nodded, and picked up a newspaper. "Just a little more this evening." Fumie started making coffee. She said, "What do you think about buying a car for Izumi?" He frowned. "A car? What for?" "Well, it's a long way to the station, and if she gets a job, she'll need to go there..." He shook his head. "I don't really think we need it." As she watched the coffee drip, she said, "Do you know if Kurata always just has rice for lunch?" Shigeru laughed. "I never noticed. I do know he gets sleepy after lunch sometimes. I've seen him getting tired at his desk. He'll stop, and jab himself in the hand with his brush handle several times. Then he'll slap his face to wake up." Fumie shook her head. "He shouldn't do that." She went to set the coffee drainer in the sink, and glanced at the vegetables beside it. She nodded.
The next day, at lunch, Izumi brought a large pot of soup out. The three men looked at it and said, "Oh, that looks good. It smells good!" Izumi smiled and started ladling soup into bowls. "Please. Fumie made it for your lunches. There's plenty, I'll leave it so you can have seconds if you want." She looked at Sugai. "I'm not sure how well it will go with your sweets, though." Komine said, "Well, it will be nice addition, even though I have plenty." Kurata suddenly frowned.
After lunch, Kurata carried the pot of soup and the bowls back into the kitchen. Fumie was at the sink. She turned around and said, "Oh, you didn't have to bring that. I could've gotten it later." He said, "Thank you for the soup." He set the platter on the table. Then he looked at Fumie and said, "I hate to say this, but... if you made the soup for me, please don't bother anymore. I get good pay, and I'm taking care of myself. I don't need pity." Fumie picked up the soup pot and put it in the sink. "I'm sorry if I insulted you, but really, I made the soup for Shigeru." Kurata said, "What?" Fumie picked up the bowls. "I used to help Shigeru with the manga." Kurata said, "Yes, sensei talks about how much you did." Fumie shook her head. "I filled in lines, I drew shadows where he told me to. I didn't really do very much, but it was something we did together. Now, he has three assistants. I really can't help anymore. But I thought I could make soup. And if you're healthy, warm, well, that helps him. So, if it is okay, I'll keep making soup." She turned back to the sink. Kurata bowed, and said, "Gochiso sama." (Thank you for the food)
Later, Kurata finished a drawing and glanced over it. Then he stood up and handed it to Shigeru. "I think this is ready." Shigeru looked at it, and smiled. "Perfect. That tower is excellent." Kurata sat down again, picked up the next page, and said, "Let's go!" He started working on it. Komine glanced across the desks at him.
Toyokawa, the Shonen Land editor-in-chief, and Funayama, the TV producer, ran down the street together to Shigeru's house. They crowded into the entryway. "Fumie!" She rushed out. "What's wrong?" Toyokawa said, "It came!" Funayama panted, then said, "Devil Boy... they're doing it!" After a moment, Fumie turned and yelled, "Shigeru!" He came out, and looked at them. "What is all the noise?" Toyokawa said, "Devil Boy is going to be on television." Shigeru looked at him and said, "Really?" Funayama said, "Yes!" They all pounded on each other in excitement.
