a.k.a. and they all clapped
In the shopping area the day of the television show, there were simple advertisements everywhere for Devil Boy, on television October 6 at 7 PM. Yamada, the young shopkeeper's wife, handed a copy of the advertisement to a customer. The customer said, "I already saw this." Yamada said, "Sure, but this one has a coupon for 10% off at the store. Take it home with you." The customer walked off.
The other two wives came around the corner and laughed. Yamada said, "Are you sure about urging my customers to watch? Isn't it going to be scary?" Matsui, the cosmetics saleslady, said, "It's going to be very popular. Your customers will be happy you told them about it."
In the coffee shop, Kameda talked with the coffee shop man. "Can I watch the show here tonight? You've got a better television." The coffee shop man said, "Sure. I was going to watch it myself." Kameda chuckled. "Besides, it'll be good to watch it together. It won't be so scary that way."
In the family living room, Fumie looked at a bunch of cards and letters. She pulled one out, and read a telegram of congratulations from Michiko, the rental manga bookstore woman. Izumi asked from the kitchen, "How many people are coming to the party?" Fumie said, "Let's see... Shigeru's brother and his family, the three assistants, us... watch out, that's boiling over!" Izumi turned back to the pot and turned the gas off.
Later, Shigeru and Fumie sat at the table with Yuichi, Shigeru's older brother, and his wife Sachiko. Yuichi said, "It's really great. I've been telling everyone at work. I've always been embarrassed to talk about my brother drawing manga, but this is exciting." Shigeru wrinkled his nose. Yuichi slapped the table. "At last you followed my advice. Do you remember, I told you you should do television a long time ago." He laughed.
Shigeru said, "Well, Shuhei and Kinuyo are happy, too." Yuichi said, "You mean the Anger?" Shigeru laughed. "I called them, and they are going to be watching, just like everyone else." Yuichi said, "It's good that television goes everywhere, so they don't have to come here."
Aiko came in and said, "There's a stranger here..." Yuichi and Shigeru looked at each other. "It couldn't be?" They both stared at the doorway.
Uraki walked in. He smirked at the attention. "I see you were waiting for me!" He handed Fumie a wrapped package. "Here, I brought a gift." Shigeru snorted. "That's unusual." He started to rip the paper off. Sachiko looked at it, and said, "Isn't that the free gift they were giving away in the shopping area today?" Shigeru pulled out a plate and set it on the table. Uraki said, "Well, I thought a plate would be good for the celebration later."
Aiko walked in the door again and said, "Grandfather." Yuichi laughed. "Aiko, this is just your father's friend." Shigeru and Fumie looked past Yuichi and said, "It can't be." Aiko said, "Grandmother!"
Kinuyo stood in the archway behind Yuichi and said, "What can't be?" Yuichi and Sachiko turned, and then scrambled up and around the table. Shuhei came through the arch, and smiled at everyone. "That's a long walk from the station. And gravel streets!" Then Mitsuo, Shigeru's younger brother, stumbled in, carrying a suitcase and with a large bundle wrapped around his shoulders. Yuichi and Shigeru said, "Mitsuo, too?" Kinuyo said, "Of course. Here, we brought a present for you." She helped Mitsuo put the bundle on the table, and unwrapped it. Shigeru said, "Sweet potatoes!" He grabbed one and broke it, and started to eat it.
Fumie and Izumi quickly cut the sweet potatoes into chunks and set a platter of them on the table. As everyone settled into chairs, Yuichi looked at Mitsuo. "I thought you were working in Kyushu? What are you doing here?" Mitsuo shrugged. "I... well, I took a vacation and went home. And then..."
Kinuyo said, "Our television broke. It was terrible, the picture was all wavy..." Mitsuo stared at her. "I didn't know that?" She swatted his leg, and continued. "So we thought about buying a new television, but decided coming here and watching it with you would be best." Yuichi groaned and muttered, "Best for who?"
Kinuyo looked at Uraki, who was standing in the doorway between the living room and the kitchen. "Uraki!" He straightened up. She picked up a slice of a sweet potato and marched up to him. "You shouldn't be so shy. Here, eat this!" She shoved it into his hand, and he nibbled at it. Then he said, "Well, I should probably go, I don't want to intrude on family..." Kinuyo said, "Nonsense. Unless you don't want to watch Shigeru's show?" He said, "Actually, I'm supposed to meet some friends to watch it." Uraki stepped into the living room, and pressed the slice of sweet potato into Shigeru's hand. "Congratulations, Shigeru!" Then he scurried out of the room.
Izumi said to Fumie, "I don't think I've ever seen him act like that." Fumie said, "I think Kinuyo scares him."
The three assistants, Komine, Kurata, and Sugai, walked into the archway. Komine said, "Sensei? We've finished work for the day." Shigeru smiled at them, and said, "Good. The show will start before too long." Then he waved at them and said, "These are my assistants." Shuhei turned and looked at them. "Your company is really growing."
Then they all moved the tables out of the way, preparing to watch the show.
Later, everyone was on the floor in front of the television, watching intently. From the set came an eerie echoing chant. The screen showed a young actor, his hand raised, with the lettering over the picture "Devil Boy."
In Genbee's house, Genbee, Fumie's father, Miyako, his mother, and Kumiko, their first son's wife, and two grandchildren watched. The grandchildren started to tickle each other, and Genbee said, "Quiet!" Then Tetsu, the first son, walked in and said, "Is it starting?" Genbee barked "Quiet!" Tetsu sat down.
Nakamori, the upstairs guy, and his family watched their television. Mephisto appeared in a flash on the screen. Nakamori said, "Shigeru, Fumie, congratulations!"
In a cheap chinese restaurant, Tomita, Shigeru's first publisher, looked at the television over the crowd. They started arguing, and Tomita slapped the table. "Quiet!" Then he said, "I'm trying to watch, it's just a good part." On the screen, the young actor looked at a strange monster with many eyes.
Back in Shigeru's living room, Kinuyo leaned forward as the screen started showing manga pages with the credits. "Where's your name? Oh, is that all? Won't it come again?" Then she said, "There it is!" and started clapping. Everyone joined in.
In Genbee's house, they clapped. Even the grandchildren. Nakamori and his family, Tomita in the chinese restaurant, they all clapped.
Kameda and the coffeeshop man clapped. Beside them, Uraki also clapped. He turned away, and rubbed at his nose.
Later, in Shigeru's living room, the table was covered with food. Beer bottles and orange soda sat ready. Everyone started to pick up glasses. Fumie looked around, then muttered, "Where is Shigeru?"
She quickly walked into the office. He stood in the darkened office, with the telephone in his hand. He said, "You saw it?"
In Inui's house, Inui, Japan's smallest publisher, told the telephone, "I saw it. It was really good. Congratulations." He listened for a moment, then said, "Thank you." He hung up the telephone, and sat there. Sanae, his wife, said, "What did he say?"
Inui turned to her with a small smile. "He... ah, he said, my editing was just right. I said it was a great manga, and it is. And now, it has become really great."
Back in the office, Shigeru stood in the dark. Fumie said, "Shigeru? The celebration party... they're all waiting for you." He turned and walked by her. He gripped her shoulder for a moment as he walked past.
In the office, Fumie felt a tear trickle down her cheek, even though she smiled. Then she went to the party.
