a.k.a. Revelations...

Fumie was polishing the furniture. Kinuyo came in, and said, "Have you seen Shuhei?" Fumie looked at her and said, "He's still not back? It's getting late." Kinuyo said, "I don't know where he is." Fumie said, "Well, I could go look a little..." Kinuyo shook her head. "No, no, you don't need to do that. He has a key, he can come in when he gets here."

Just then, there were voices at the door. Fumie said, "That must be him." They hurried to the entryway. Sugai and Aikawa were maneuvering through the doorway, with Shuhei between them. Kinuyo said, "I'll get an ambulance." Shuhei said, "No, no." Aikawa said, "We already stopped at the emergency room. They sent him home." Fumie said, "But what are you doing with him?" Sugai said, "We met them at the coffeeshop." Kinuyo said, "Them?" Shuhei said, "No..."

A woman stepped in the door, carrying Shuhei's bag. "Here, I knew you would want this." She smiled. Kinuyo glared at her and said, "So you're the one!" Fumie looked at Yoshiko and said, "Go call the doctor and see if he can come over now." Shigeru walked into the entryway and said, "Oh, hello? You're... that woman from the other day, from the stage group?" The woman nodded. "Yes, I'm Kawanishi, the playwright from the stage group. I'm sorry about this, Sensei."

Later, Fumie walked the doctor and nurse out the front door. Then she hurried back to the living room. Shigeru and Kawanishi sat there. Shigeru said, "So, how is Strong Stomach?"  Fumie said, "The doctor says he'll be fine. He... he took too much blood pressure medicine. But the doctor says not to worry." Shigeru nodded. Fumie glanced at Kawanishi. "But what were you doing with him?"

Shigeru chuckled. "We've just been talking about that. They went to a kabuki play. It seems Shuhei has been telling stories." Kawanishi nodded. "Yes. Well, actually, my grandfather and Shuhei were good friends." Fumie said, "What?" Kawanishi said, "Yes. When Shuhei was telling stories the other day, I thought it sounded familiar. Then when I got home, I talked with my father, and he confirmed it." She shook her head. "So I wrote that letter to ask if he would mind telling me more about my grandfather." Shigeru nodded. "It seems they have been doing a lot of talking."

Kinuyo came around the corner. "So, you're the grandchild of..." The woman said, "Kawanishi? Yes." Kinuyo shook her head slowly. She held out her hands toward the woman. "Oh, I remember. They were such good friends. They loved the silent movies. And went to college together. So how is your grandfather?" Kawanishi said, "He passed away last year. But I heard lots of stories before that." Kinuyo said, "I'll bet. They were always talking about movies. I'd bring tea and biscuits in, because Shuhei didn't drink, and they'd talk late into the night. I remember."

Kawanishi said, "One thing I particularly wanted to talk with Shuhei about was their script." Shigeru said, "Script?" She nodded. "Yes, they were writing a movie script. About an explosion in a ship." Shigeru said, "That must have been the Dai San Maru explosion." Kawanishi said, "Yes, that's the one. But my grandfather said the script was never fiinished, that it ended just before the explosion. And he wanted to know how it ended. That was his dream. So I asked Shuhei about it."

At the door, Shigeru and Fumie said goodbye to Kawanishi. She said, "I'm sorry all this happened. But, maybe when he's feeling better, I can come back again?" Fumie said, "Of course." Then Kawanishi said, "I did want to ask. Why did Shuhei keep our meetings a secret? I thought you all knew?" Fumie said, "Well...I'm not sure."

As Fumie and Shigeru walked back into the living room, Shigeru said, "I remember that movie script. Shuhei told me all about it. But it was a tragic story. I think the end might be everything blowing up." Then he shook his head. "Why do you think he didn't tell us about meeting her?" Fumie looked puzzled. Then she said, "Maybe... maybe he enjoyed the feeling of a date, some?" Shigeru shrugged. "He does enjoy meeting pretty girls."

In their rooms, Kinuyo sat by Shuhei, who lay in the bed under the covers. She said, "So you were writing the end of your script." Shuhei frowned. Then he sat up. "She told you about that." Kinuyo nodded. Shuhei said, "I wasn't going to tell you until it was finished." Kinuyo said, "Why?" Shuhei shook his head. "I knew you'd just complain if you knew what I was doing." Kinuyo said, "No. Well..." Shuhei said, "Wait. Were you jealous? Is that why you were grumpy?" Kinuyo said, "Of course not. But..." She picked up his bag and set it on the bed. "Look, just go ahead and write. And when you're ready, I'll read it." Shuhei looked at her. She shrugged. "Whatever keeps you healthy."

Another morning, Aiko came out the front door, wearing a business dress and smiling. Fumie came out, and said, "You're taking the teacher's test today?" Aiko said, "Yes. Don't worry, though." Fumie said, "I'm not worried. You'll do fine. Now go, you don't want to be late." Aiko ran.

Yoshiko came into the kitchen, yawning. "Where's Aiko?" Fumie said, "She's already gone. And I'm going to the hospital soon, so you'll have to get your own breakfast." Yoshiko nodded. Then she said, "Mom? Is Dad really upset about Aiko taking the teaching exams?" Fumie smiled. "I think he's just concerned about where she might go. I mean, I want her to succeed, but I also don't really want her to go." Yoshiko said, "Well, failing would be terrible. After all the work she's done." Fumie said, "Work?" Yoshiko said, "Yes, every night, she studies and studies. Really hard." Fumie said, "Well, it sounds like she picked her own road, and wants it. That's good." Then Fumie glanced at the clock. "Oh, I'm late. I've got to run." She pulled off her apron and tossed it on a chair.

Yoshiko sat in the kitchen by herself and said, "Her own road? I wonder what my road is..."
