a.k.a. why did I say that?

Fumie lifted a plate with several Japanese cakes on it and said, "Shuhei, I hope you enjoy these cakes." Then she set it down on the small household shrine in the parents' rooms. The shrine was arranged with a picture of Shuhei with black and white ribbons, the small wooden tablet, and the white-wrapped box of ashes on the top step. Below those were a small vase of flowers, a bowl of sand with incense, a Japanese bell sitting on a small pillow, and a candle.

Outside, Aiko opened the mailbox and looked at the letters inside. She picked up one and said, "It's here!" She started to open it, then stopped, and held it up to the sunshine, peering at it. Fumie came out and said, "Oh, you're early today." Aiko smiled at her and said, "Yes, it's a beautiful morning." Aiko's hand fell to her side, holding the letter. Then she turned, and said, "See you later, then." She walked away.

Fumie opened the mailbox and took out several letters and cards. She picked up one and looked at it. She shook her head.

Inside, she talked with Shigeru over his breakfast. She told him that her parents were travelling around Japan, and would be visiting Hakone. The letter said they might visit Tokyo afterwards. She said, "This might be their first trip anywhere together. I don't think Miyako has ever taken a vacation before." Shigeru nodded. "It's good for them."

Then he frowned. "What do you think about Kinuyo?" Fumie shrugged. "She seems happy. Although, I'm not sure if Sachiko was." Shigeru chuckled. They remembered Kinuyo wearing new pink-tinted glasses, setting off with an overnight bag. Sachiko stood in the street, as Kinuyo said goodbye to Shigeru and Fumie. Then Kinuyo turned to Sachiko and said, "Well, we're off! Let's go." Sachiko gritted her teeth as she walked off.

Later in the day, Aiko walked through the shopping center carrying a large white box. The wives saw her, and said, "Where are you going? Isn't that a cake?" Aiko grinned. "I shouldn't say anything until I get home..." Yamada, the youngest wife, said, "What? No, now you have to tell us. What's happened?" Aiko said, "I passed!" The wives looked at each other, and at her. "Oh! You passed?"

At home, Aiko set the box on the kitchen table, and smiled at Fumie and Shigeru across the table. She held out the letter, and said, "I passed!" Fumie and Shigeru said, "You passed?" Shigeru took the letter, looked at it, and shook his head. He flattened the letter on the box. "I can't believe..." He took a step sideways, and said, "I've got work to do." He stomped off.

Fumie looked down and said, "That's not good." Aiko said, "What?" Fumie looked at her. "Oh, no, I didn't mean...not you. Congratulations, really. But... Shigeru is so upset." Aiko said, "Why? What has he got to be upset about?" Fumie said, "Well, yes. I could make red bean rice for celebration. But... maybe I had better not today. How about if we just have the cake today, and another day I'll fix red bean rice?" Aiko picked up the letter and folded it. "I can see no one cares." She picked up the box, and walked out of the kitchen.

Later, Yoshiko walked into the sisters' room. Aiko sat at her desk, with a chunk of cake in her hand. She had frosting on her face, and the big cake sat on the desk, white frosting with strawberries. Aiko muttered, "Nobody else cares, I'll celebrate by myself." Yoshiko looked at her eating the cake and said, "I can't believe it." Aiko glared at her. "I PASSED! And I don't care what anyone thinks. Now get out of here." Aiko pushed Yoshiko into her part of the room, and pulled the curtain shut. Aiko sat down again. Yoshiko pushed her head through the curtain. "I didn't mean... can I have some cake?"

In the shopping center, Fumie walked along. Matsui stopped her, and said, "Congratulations! Aiko passed." Fumie smiled, but tilted her head. "Thanks, but..." Matsui said, "What? What's wrong?"

In the wive's living room, Fumie sat with the three wives. "It's just that... Shigeru wanted Aiko to work at Mizuki Productions, and now..." Matsui nodded. "I can understand that. Parents want to help their children." Yamada frowned. "But she really wants to be a teacher. And it isn't like she's going to a foreign country, she'd just be interning in Tokyo." Miura said, "But Tokyo is really big." Fumie listened to them chattering, and said, "What should I do?" The three wives said, "Sah... that's hard to say..."

Later, in her own living room, Fumie was folding clothes. Shigeru came in and sat on the sofa. He nodded, firmly, and gestured with a feather in his hand. "I've been thinking about it. Here's what Aiko is going to do. First, she'll work in the company for a year or so. And I talked with a friend, who thinks he can arrange a job for her in a local school. What do you think?" Fumie said, "Well, don't you think we could let her try teaching for a while?" He shook his head, and swept the feather down. "No. Absolutely not. That's not safe." As he spoke, Fumie glanced past him at the doorway, and started trying to interrupt. "Shigeru?"

Aiko stepped into the room. She glared at Shigeru. "Dad! What do you think you're doing? I passed!" Shigeru looked over at her, and let his hand fall. "Oh. You heard?" Aiko said, "Yes. And I don't understand. You always say to do what you like, and then you come up with this?" Shigeru frowned. "I just want..." Aiko said, "Most parents would be thrilled to have a teacher in the family. What's wrong with teaching, anyway?" Shigeru snorted. "Well... well... if you go teach, I'm not going to be happy!"

At dinner, Aiko sat by Shigeru, with Fumie across from him and Yoshiko across from AIko. They ate in silence. Then Aiko and Shigeru reached toward the bottles in the middle of the table at the same time. And pulled their hands back. Aiko reached out again, picked up the soy sauce, and splashed some on her food. Then she dropped the bottle back in the middle. Shigeru reached out and picked up the vinegar beside it. He dropped that bottle back, too.

Yoshiko leaned over to Fumie and said, "What's going on?" Fumie whispered, "It's difficult..."

After dinner, Yoshiko helped Fumie clear the table. Yoshiko said, "So Dad wants to stop Aiko from teaching? I don't think that's fair. She's worked so hard for this." Fumie said, "What do you mean?" Yoshiko said, "Maybe you don't know it, but she's worked every night, studying. She really wants this. She reminds me of Dad, really, the way she has focused on this." Fumie nodded.

Then Fumie looked thoughtful. "Say, that reminds me, what about your career?" Yoshiko wrinkled her nose. "Oh, well, that's not the problem now. But I think you should do something. I don't want to eat like that again."

Later, Fumie knocked on the door of the sisters' room, and walked in. Aiko was making notes, reading from a book. Fumie said, "Oh, you're studying?" Aiko said, "Yes. There's still a lot to learn." Fumie said, "Yes. But... ah, Aiko, please don't be too upset with Shigeru. He's not really so bad." Aiko looked up. "No. But when I was in elementary school, he tried to make me draw. Do you remember? He had me putting little dots in spirals, over and over again? And I hated it!" Fumie said, "It's just... drawing and manga is what he knows best." Aiko shook her head. "Right. And later, he tried so hard to make me do animation. That's his dream, not mine." She stared at Fumie. "Why can't I follow my dream?"

Fumie sighed. "He's worried. He thinks if you go far away, maybe you won't come back. He just wants you close. Can you give him a little time?" Aiko stood up. "Actually, I think a school that is far away will be better!" Fumie said, "Why?" Aiko said, "Because if I'm far away, maybe I won't be Shigeru Mizuki's daughter." Fumie said, "Oh. But Aiko, he's just worried about you." Aiko shook her head. "Well, I don't dislike Dad, but I'm Aiko Murai. I'm not like you." Then she looked at Fumie. "I have to decide my own path."

Fumie stood in the kitchen and cleaned carrots. She stared into space as she ran the peeler over them.
