Someone asked me recently what there was to eat in Japan. I kind of stumbled around answering, and thought maybe I'd do better if I just put some of what I eat up here on my blog. So…

Today we had lunch at the food court in a local shopping center. For about 500 yen (5 to 6 dollars, depending on the exchange rate), I got a bowl full of udon noodles, topped with beef somewhat like you might get in a steak sub -- fine-sliced and cooked through? Along with sliced burdock root, which is a chewy nice vegetable. The noodles, which are white flour noodles made fresh in the store, were in a nice soup stock, and it's served hot. So you use your chopsticks to scoop noodles, meat, and root up and chew. Pick up the bowl and slurp, too, if you like. Good meal for a chilly day.

And on the side, I had kakeage -- which literally means fried stuff. It apparently came about as a kind of "clean-out-the-extras" for tempura, as people would take whatever was around, chop it fine, toss it in the tempura batter, and then deep-fry it. In this case, it's mostly fine chopped onions, much like onion rings. A bit of carrot sliced in today's version, but tasty anyway.

Simple lunch, but pretty filling. Give it a try if you're in Japan.
