This was in CNN and probably other places, but you might want to take a look at http://www.laptopgiving.org/en/index.php if you live in the United States or Canada. Apparently for the next few days (until Nov. 26?) you can buy a One Laptop Per Child computer for $399 for yourself (or a child of your acquaintance) and donate one to a child in a foreign country.
