a.k.a. bookstore Olympics!

Fumie was outside hanging clothes when Uraki walked through the gate, carrying a copy of Zeta, the new magazine, and grumbling about why hadn't Shigeru told him this was coming. She greeted him, and he strode over. "What's the idea of being so unfriendly! Why didn't you tell me about this?"

A young boy stood behind the wives with a stack of books, a ribbon around his neck. Kiyo waved the wives out of the way. "Let our customer through!"

a.k.a. a fight in the bookstore

The bookstore Olympics had brought many children to the store. It was festive, with a poster showing gold medals for 30 books, silver for 20, and bronze for 10. Children sat at the table, reading, while others looked through the shelves. Michiko and Kiyo watched, delighted.

As Fumie started to leave, she could hear children yelling and dogs barking outside, somewhere. She peeked out, carefully, but saw nothing. Shigeru said, "Be careful."
