mbarker: (Me typing?)
(just for fun...)

Mitsuko gave away her moose recently. But at least we know where it went.

I suppose I should back up a little bit and explain. When we were in Banff, Canada for a conference earlier this year, Mitsuko visited the various tourist shops that line the main street of the town. And she came back saying that she wanted to buy a moose! When I asked her what she was talking about, she said I had to see it.

So we made a special trip to find the tourist shop that had a moose. When we walked in, the sales lady said, "Oh, you brought your husband." And Mitsuko walked over to a section of the floor where something suddenly jumped and rolled around, laughing madly. When it stopped rolling, I could see that it was a small stuffed moose, about the size of a small coffee can. One of us moved and the moose started rolling and laughing again. Mitsuko was laughing too.

The clerk took us over to a stack of small boxes. She explained that they had other models. There was a cat, a dog, a cow... I've forgotten the varieties. But Mitsuko really liked the moose, so we found one of those, and bought it.

We brought it back to Japan, and she showed it to a few people. Who also seemed to enjoy this strange rolling laughing toy just about as much as she did. I have to admit, it didn't seem quite that funny to me, but I was certainly willing to enjoy it with them. Even if it did seem like kind of a silly electronic toy.

However, recently we went to visit a friend of ours whose husband died last year around Thanksgiving. She has family who live with her. She and her husband had visited Mitsuko and I in America, and we had attended the funeral.

On this visit, Mitsuko brought along her moose. And sure enough, when she put it on the floor and it started rolling around laughing, the woman we know also started laughing. She deliberately walked in front of the moose several times, setting off the sensor, so that it would roll around and laugh. And she laughed along with it.

Her daughter smiled, and told us privately that she thought that was the first time since her husband died that the woman had really laughed.

At the end of our visit, Mitsuko insisted that the moose was a present. The woman tried to give it back, but Mitsuko insisted.

So we came home without our moose. I'm not sure when or if we'll get another one, but I think this one is right where it belongs. Rolling and laughing.

Sometimes those silly electronic toys are just right.

The End

(I believe the trade name is Chuckle Buddy Rolling Moose)
