Chiritotechin 3/17-22
Mar. 23rd, 2008 04:31 pmThis was the next-to-the-last week (3/24-29 will be the last week!), and I'm afraid it was kind of floppy.
I think the writers were trying to do some short bits and fill time, maybe tie up a few loose ends, before we do whatever the grand finale is. So we had fun, a bit of comic confrontation between the writer and the uncle, more talk, another comic scene, a bit of set up, and a swerve into the last performance in the old house, which was the big scene for the week.
Monday: Kiyoshi did a private performance for the family, Kiyomi brought Kosojyaku back to the school where they all were happy to see him (along with a scene that echoed that when Soso came back and the teacher hugged him), and the Tenguzan master said they were difficult to work with, and they might as well forget the practice hall.
Tuesday: Tenguzan challenges them to show him they are serious. And Natsuko and the uncle have a confrontation over him keeping the lottery winnings secret, but by the end of the show, Natsuko is making nikujaga (meat and potatoes) which is a special concession since she has made a big thing of not being a nikujaga woman (i.e., she likes her independence).
Wednesday: Ako asks father to teach her to paint chopsticks. And the students have a big talk about trying to build a practice hall.
Thursday: Father tells Ako that when you start grinding a chopstick, you don't know what is inside. Mom gets excited about what might be inside the old crystal, and Ako smashes it. Then a comic scene with Father having gotten government recognition for his chopsticks and uncle and Natsuko announcing that they are going to get married, ending with mom crying because she is so happy.
Friday: Ako finds Kiyomi listening to the old tape in the chopstick workshop. They talk about her listening every day when she was a child, and that Ako has put the crystal into chopsticks. Then Kiyomi races back and they talk to Tenguzan again. He says if you can, show me. They are counting their money, but it's not enough. Then uncle comes in, and everyone has contributed what they can.
Saturday: Counting money, and there's still not enough. Kosojyaku announces he will sell the house, and they talk about all the memories tied up in it. Then Kiyomi suggest that they have a last Rakugo performance. (Flash to Ako grinding her chopsticks in the workshop.) The students are setting up the house for the performance, and Rakugo performers and masters start coming in. (Ako is still grinding.) They rearrange the house to do performance in garden.
Yusuke starts off, then Kiyomi. (Ako grinding, but father is now watching.) Shiso, Kosojyaku, Soso. Sogen starts doing atagoyama, with the teacher's performance echoing.
The crowd is still growing, and the other rakugo performers start asking if they can perform too. (Ako holds her shiny new chopsticks up in the sunshine. Father and mom watch. Then she sits back and cries.) The students are laughing with each other about just how long will this show go on.
Tenguzan comes in, and tells them that they've done it, so maybe we will build a practice hall. Tells the teacher's picture that they've done it. Smiles and leaves.
Then we got flashes of next week.
Now, Saturday was great. Part of what I really appreciated was the interlaced grinding of the chopsticks, with no voice, just action. But . . . most of the other scenes this week were fun, but didn't really move things forward? My wife kept asking me, "Are they still filling time?"
Well - on to the last week, and we'll see what the finale is. Apparently we're going to build a practice hall for Osaka.
Stay tuned. One more week.
