I hope they don't fizzle . . .

That rakugo show - Chiritotechin - is having its final week now. And I am a bit concerned that the rumors of a grand finale may be a bit too enthusiastic.
So far this week, at least, things aren't quite that grand. Good, solid episodes, although a bit fluffy, but . . .
Monday: They have their practice hall, by reform of the old school! And they are fussing about what to call it. Along the way, Kiyomi hints that she is not sure about continuing with rakugo (horrors!). And they find a name. Higurashi. Kanji is 蜩 for those eager Japanese students out there. Evening cicada, Tanna japonensis?
Tuesday: tada! Kiyomi is pregnant!
Wednesday: Kiyomi says she'll do Atagoyama at the opening, but she's still throwing up. Mom asks Soso to let her rest. Junko tells her it will be okay, she'll find something new soon.
Thursday: Opening day, meet Sogen's boy, who is now 20 years old. And flashes of Mom here and there. Great little sequence with the different students explaining different facets of higurashi. It's the symbol of the school, it's the cicada, it's everyday, and it's a sign of Wakasa painted chopsticks, our sponsor :-)
Friday: Kiyomi does give a show, and does Atagoyama. Intermixed with flashes of her growing up, and mom helping (loved the one with mom throwing plates at Atagoyama, and tossing her wallet - and little Kiyomi laughing). End of the story, Kiyomi waits for silence, then announces that this is her last performance.
Back in the practice room, she explains to the other students and her family that she had told her mother she didn't want to be like her. But now she can see that a mother is like the ocean, always around, but hard to see. Hard to realize how important it is. And that she wants to be like her mother.
I'm not sure that deciding to give up rakugo to be a mother is exactly a grand finale? More like a return to the norm?
I do know that there is one more day. So . . . maybe they'll push it up a notch tomorrow.
Stay tuned. At least for one more day.
(What am I going to watch in the morning next week? Argh.)
