What is it about changing time zones too quickly? And especially the second time in a week or so?

Last week I was in America for two workshops. As usual, I was somewhat sleepy during the day but did reasonably well. Then collapsed at nine or 10 at night, slept for a few hours, and started waking up -- so I sort of napped more than slept. And then I flew back, starting Monday and arriving in Japan Tuesday evening. I actually napped several times during the trip. And Tuesday night, fell asleep early, and woke several times, finally getting up at 5 or so, feeling very energetic. That lasted a couple of hours, at which point I was reasonably certain I had run into a wall or something. Still, I managed to stay up until about three in the afternoon -- when I slept hard and deep until seven or so.

So Wednesday and Thursday I got up very early, went to the office and had a couple of hours of feeling energetic, and then someone pulled the plug.

Today also started the same way -- up at five, in the office for a couple of hours of energy, and now it's nine o'clock in the morning and I feel as if I should take a nap. And EAT!

I keep thinking about Howard Taylor's comments about Smart Howard and Dumb Howard, and the need to make sure that the right one is doing the work. Right now Dumb Mike is getting plenty of time, while the body recovers from the jetslagging. Just melted down under the impact. I guess I just have to wait for the biorhythms to get back in sync. But it sure is boring!

I'm hungry at the wrong times, I keep having bursts of energy followed by utter exhausted what-am-I-doing bewilderment, and I don't even have the excuse of being sick to fall back on. Still, time for Dumb Mike to fill in some forms, I guess. Tote that bale and sort papers while we wait for the biological clock to adjust itself to the external one again, I guess.

I've heard that Melatonin (purchased at health food stores?) helps with jetslagging. I've not tried ('m not a time zone jumper) but have heard from many who are that it helps.

Daylight is the best way to fix yout clock - also being bloody minded enough about it all to damn well STAY awake/asleep as appropriate.

And of course we're having rainy days :-)

I suppose part of it may be that when I'm traveling at a conference or something, I force myself to stay up - but when I'm home, it's a little easier to pamper myself (aka collapse). Thanks!
