Keynotes: Yep, the girl (Fumie) can dance if she wants to. And Yukie and Genbee are heading for a collision of some kind...

Drat. I printed up the chart of the families involved in this show, and asked my wife about the names. Apparently I got them mostly wrong. Here's most of the current cast of characters, hopefully with the right names (and when I listened closer today, at least some of the names were indeed what she said... I'm not sure where those other names came from. That will teach me to trust a random web page :-)

The wife's family (Iida)

Grandma: Toshi (Father's mother, lives with them)
Father: Genbee (I got one right!)
Mother: Miyako
Mother's mother: Teruko (I don't think we've seen her yet)
Oldest daughter: Akiko
Second daugher: Yukie (yeah, I got that one right, too.)
The girl who will be wife: Fumie! I can't believe I got her name wrong.
One brother: Tetsu
Another brother: Takashi
Youngest sister (baby introduced today!): Izumi

The artist is Shigeru Murai.
The young girl friend is Chiyoko.

There's a group of family for the artist, and a set of Tokyo people, that we haven't met yet.

So the write up yesterday had most of the names wrong. I'll try to get them right from now on.

Today's episode picked up with the boys in the garden with masks on their head. Genbee (father) asked what they're doing, and they said they are off to the obon festival. He laughed at the masks, and Fumie (the girl) hid a smile, remembering (in a flashback) that the boys had said the masks were Father's face. The boys ran out, and Genbee asked Fumie what she is doing. She waffled, and he urged her to go dancing. He said dancing would make you happy, and if you're happy, you're healthy.

Theme...

And Toshi (grandma) and Fumie (the girl) were decorating the butsudan. This is the family shrine for the dead ancestors. Fumie asked Toshi whether the dead really come back, and she said not physically. But sometimes their spirits... then she started talking about how grandfather loved dancing, and that if Fumie does the best dance she can, it will make him happy.

Shift to the obon festival, with everyone in summer yukata (cotton robes), dancing. Yukie smiled at her boyfriend across the square, but then saw Genbee and signaled no, no. Genbee looked around.

Next, at the house, Chiyoko (the little girl friend) was at the door. Toshi (grandma) greeted her, and called Fumie. We see her geta (wooden sandals) and the bottom of her robe, and Chiyoko said, "Wow!"

Back to the obon festival. The boys who teased them yesterday were dancing, and saw Chiyoko and someone in a fancy straw hat with flowers coming in. It's Fumie, and they started to dance. The boys singsonged "Denshi bashira" (electric pole) making fun of Fumie (she is taller, and apparently deals with things by freezing). Dad saw them teasing, but Toshi grabbed his arm and left it to Fumie.

Fumie stopped for a moment, surrounded by the boys, then said, "Just do the best dance you can," and stepped back into the dancing group. The boys started to follow, then said, "What's that?" and we saw a shimmering figure dance beside, then settle on Fumie (a ghost?).

Next, the family was at the river side. It was dark, but people were passing behind them with lanterns. The family had a little straw boat, with flowers and candles, that they set in the river and let go. There were other such boats, too. They were saying goodby to the ancestors, and Toshi commented on the long trip they have taken. And there was a comment about things you can't see, but are there.

And there's a clip of an air attack, with the voice over telling us that it's Showa 18 (a year later). The boy was going to war, and food was getting scarce. Father was raising bees -- apparently honey was a wartime delicacy? So we see Genbee and Miyako (the mother) smoking the bees, and pulling the boards (and Miyako gets stung). Fumie was hand-cranking a gadget that separates the honey and the wax. There was a new baby, I think Izumi.

And Miyako and Toshi were making ... green something wrapped around rice cakes? Not seaweed, a lighter green, and thicker layer.

Next, we heard Genbee yelling, and Yukie came storming out. She was refusing the man that Genbee recommended for an arranged wedding.

Fumie and her friend Chiyoko were eating the rice cakes, sitting near the shrine. Then as Fumie got up and started home, she ran into a young man in a uniform. She dropped a basket with three eggs, breaking them. Yep, it was the boy. But he apologized, said his eyes aren't good, and got a box with about six eggs out of his bag and gave it to her. Then he went up the street. Chiyoko asked who that was, and Fumie says she doesn't know him.

Yukie talked with Fumie. She said she wants to go far away, to an unknown town, where all the people are unknown, and no one has ever heard of their town. She asked Fumie if she doesn't dream of that, and Fumie said, no, she likes their town.

Father was talking with Mother, saying that they've been too kind to Yukie, and it's time to be more strict. Meanwhile, Yukie and Fumie were looking at a pattern book...

And that's where today's episode ended.
