aka setting expectations...

Today's episode started with a short bit from last week where Toshi (grandmother) tells Fumie (the girl who will be the wife) that "we all rely on you. You've got power. You can't see it, but it's there." Then we saw the family listening to an old radio, as the Emperor announced the end of the war. And an old couple at a train bringing returning soldiers met a one-armed soldier with glasses, calling out his name "Shigeru." (Who will be the artist).

Cut to the theme.

Kids played a game in the street (cardboard cards, which are thrown down -- if you flip the other person's card, you win. It's still a well-known game here in Japan.) Genbee (father) with a moustache and a brother were carrying big thick-walled jugs into a store -- they were now selling sake. They called Fumie, who came running out, and the brother laughed and told her to look at herself. She got a mirror out, and saw flour on her face, then joked that they have their own ghost. The voice over told us she was 21.

A brief look at Toshi making rice balls with a little sister. Then a glimpse of Miyako (mother) burning incense on her skin for rheumatism.

And Fumie loaded sake bottles onto a bicycle, then took off to deliver sake and go to sewing class. Western clothes were popular, and all the girls were learning to make them. Old style sewing machines, and talk about boys and marriages. But her friends teased her, and Fumie got upset, stood up and told them to stop. The teacher walked over, said please talk to me after class.

But the teacher wanted to offer her work at the school. At first Fumie can't see herself as a teacher, but she talked with her friend, and then said, "Yatte mio." (Try it and see).

Meanwhile, back at the house, the aunt had brought news of a possible miai (interview/meeting for an arranged wedding). Father grumbled that Fumie is still too young, but mother, grandmother, and the aunt argued.

Fumie came in, and tried to tell father about the teacher position. He interrupted, and said he has important news about miai.

Fumie was sewing, and daydreaming about weddings. Little sister asked her to make something, and she said sure... just as she ran over the edge of the piece she was sewing and broke the thread.

Next Fumie told her friend about the possible wedding. She was excited, and said it must be... then dragged Fumie off to the cake store that she thinks it is to peek at the boy. They saw a young man, and agreed that he must be the one. Then Fumie's friend went into the store, and got him to make up a box -- at which point she "discovered" that she forgot her wallet. Maybe later?

The friend went out and talked with Fumie -- when the young man came out. He gave the friend a bobbin that she dropped. And he glanced at Fumie, who hid her face. This may be the boy, but it isn't the artist Shigeru -- he has both arms and no glasses.

Fumie told her friend that she will "yatte mio" (try it and see) the arranged wedding to this boy.

The voice over told us that even though Fumie thinks it is okay, there is a problem...

And that was the end of the episode.
