aka And away we go!
Fumie's friend congratulates her, and gives her... zabuton covers! Fumie is going to have well-covered cushions. They go sit at the outside shrine, and reminisce about all the times they sat here. The friend asks about the honeymoon, and Fumie says she thinks they are just staying in Tokyo. The friend says that isn't very exciting, and Fumie says Tokyo will be exciting enough for her. They pray at the shrine. Then Fumie drops by the river, and looks around at the scenery. The voice over explains that she doesn't know when she might be able to come back...
Cut to the theme.
Old style radio crackling. Genbee is reading a newspaper, and Fumie looks at him. He suddenly covers his face with the paper. Fumie starts to talk to him, and he gets up, crosses the room saying that the radio is noisy, and changes the station. Little sister says Fumie was trying to talk, and he asks if they want to listen to the news. Little sister starts laughing about him not wanting to talk...
Fumie is in her room, packing her suitcase. Brother comes in, and asks if she has ever tried to tie a necktie. She says no, and he says you may want to practice, so that you can help your husband. She tries, and reflects on having to help. Brother says now you know how, and by the way, Genbee suggested I show you.
Out in the sake shop, Genbee is looking at bottles of sake. Fumie comes out, and asks what he is doing. He says he's picking out good sake for tomorrow (the wedding). Then he says maybe after the wedding, he'll close the shop and get out of the sake business. Fumie says you're joking. He says yes. Then he says he'll take the best sake for the wedding.
Fumie says that brother just visited, and had me practice tying a necktie. He said you told him to do that? Genbee admits that he did. He says he thinks Shigeru is a good man. Fumie asks why? Genbee answers because of the way he ate. Fumie asks what else, and Genbee says just that. That's enough, you can tell he's a good man. And I wouldn't give my important daughter to someone who wasn't a good man. Fumie says, Dan dan (thank you). Then she says she thinks she'll be happy, and that she's been happy here for a long time.
Genbee says, Oh, go to sleep, you're going to have an early start tomorrow. There's a tear trickling down his cheek, even as he grumps at her.
Fumie prays to grandm's picture. I think I've found my destiny. I'll be in Tokyo, so you watch everyone, make sure they're healthy and happy. And we hear grandma's voice congratulate her, and say that no matter where you go, I'll watch.
Morning of the 30th.
Fumie is standing in the entry way. Yukie offers her onigiri (rice ball), and she takes a bite and chokes a bit. Genbee comes out, says you need to hurry, where's mother? Miyako comes out, looks around, says, "Zori? I forgot!" and runs back inside (zori are the fancy sandals that go with kimono). There's beeping outside, and Genbee and everyone says go, go. Fumie and Miyako rush out.
Fumie is being dressed in a white wedding kimono, with her hair held with fancy ornaments, and a white headress. Miyako is watching, and the dressers say she's a beautiful bride. Then they all notice that the sleeves are short, they aren't dragging on the ground enough. The dresser grabs her assistant and says do we have another over-kimono? The assistant says that's the biggest one we have. The dresser says Oh, the new fashion is to wear this off the shoulder and tries to slip the shoulder down.
The episode ended with a medley of bits coming up. So we saw flashes of Shigeru laughing, of Kinuyo trying to signal him to stop, of Fumie crying, of Genbee and others yelling bonzai (cheering), of Fumie drinking the marriage toast, and finally of Fumie standing in a street saying, "It's not true, is it?"
To be continued...
So I think next week we'll see the wedding, and maybe get Fumie's first reaction to her new home.
