a.k.a. What have I gotten myself into?

This episode picked up with Fumie looking at the old house and saying, "It can't be true..." Then the driver asked if there was a message for the brother-in-law or sister? She said tell them thanks. Shigeru struggled to open the sliding wooden gate, and they stepped inside. The driver stood by his car, looked at the house, and said to himself, "What a house!"

Run the theme.

Shigeru took Fumie around the house. "This is the kitchen." Basically empty. "That's my working room over there." The camera panned around to show us dirty windows, torn tatami... Shigeru took her into the hall and said the bathrooms over here. And on the second floor, there's a bedroom and an extra room. Shigeru said Fumie could do whatever she wanted with that room.

Back in the kitchen, Fumie looked at the dirty windows, and muttered, "It didn't look like that in the pictures." Shigeru said, "Oh, my father used the pictures from the realtor." Then he started to dust the window sill, and opened the window because it was so dusty. There's a graveyard out back... Fumie said, "Graves?" Shigeru said, "Yeah, it's really quiet." Then he said, "I need to go to work," and stepped into his work room and slid the door shut.

Fumie looked at the closed doors, then slid the windows shut. In the other room, Shigeru is already absorbed in sketching.

Fumie poked around the kitchen. "There's nothing here. Is this how a single man lives?" She remembered the kitchen at home, with heaps of vegetables and food. Then she told herself "I can do it. I can make this work." But it's cold, and when she tries to start the heater, there's no oil in the stove. She knocked, lightly, and peeked in at Shigeru. He's absorbed and doesn't notice.

Fumie put on her coat. She ran the electric hotplate under the tea kettle. And started making a list of things to get.

There was a sudden loud banging at the door. Fumie said, "There's someone at the door." Shigeru asked who it was, and she said she didn't know. He opened his door and said be quiet, let's hide. It's probably a bill collector...

The voice from outside yelled, "Shigeru, are you in there? It's me." Shigeru said, "Oh, it's my brother." They sat down around the kitchen table, and the brother said this you got married in one week. I'm surprised... Fumie said she would make tea... The brother started going through the bundle of clothes from Shigeru. "Here's the coat, shirt... oh don't give me your tie." Fumie watched, and realized that this was the good clothes that Shigeru wore at the wedding interview. The brother said I'm sorry to be in such a rush, but I've got some work. Fumie brought cups of cold water, and apologized because there was no tea.

Fumie asked about Shigeru borrowing the suit, and the brother said Shigeru's things were in the bank. ichi roku ginko (1 6 bank -- apparently a slang name for a pawnshop). The brother and Shigeru laughed.

Then the brother asked if they were going out. No? Why was Fumie wearing her coat? Ah, just a little cold. He shivered, and put his coat on, too. Then he remembered and dug into the pocket. He got out an envelope and put it on the table, and said, "It's just a gesture." (The Japanese phrase literally means it's just feeling, but it is a traditional apology used to indicate that your present isn't really very much.) Fumie got Shigeru aside, and said, "What about the soba that my sister gave us?" Shigeru said that was a good idea, and offered to split it with the brother. The brother thanked them, and took it all... then rushed out.

After the brother left, they look in the envelope. It's free tickets to a show. "He really meant it was just a gesture. But he doesn't have money right now."

There was a banging at the door. Shigeru ran to answer it, calling, "What did you forget?"

When he opened the door, a hefty stranger came in. "Electric bill! It's been 3 months!" Shigeru said, "Well, then one more week won't hurt." And two other bill collectors pushed in. One was for water. "What about coming back next week?" "No." Fumie got out her money -- 1,000 yen.

Shigeru banged his fist on the wall. And promised that next week, as soon as he sold the manga he is working on, they would have money. Really, soon. And he went back to work.

Meanwhile, back at the her parent's house in the kitchen, they were making dinner. Genbee told them that the driver told the sister that he took them to their house.

And back with Shigeru, Fumie timidly peeked through the doors into the work room. "I'm sorry to interrupt..." Shigeru just kept drawing, and she walked in and peeked over his shoulder. A one-eyed monster! She backed up, looking at the monsters on the sheets he has stacked around him. He turned and looked at her over his shoulder.

The voice over told us that Fumie had never seen such monsters before...

And the episode ended with a medley of short upcoming scenes.
