aka What did you do?
This episode picked up with Fumie wondering what Shigeru is thinking. And pondering to herself what should I do? Then she asked Shigeru whether he didn't think it was odd that this stranger would want to live here? Shigeru shrugged and said he probably doesn't have any money. Fumie looked very puzzled and asked what about his savings? Shigeru laughed, and said, "None!"
The theme ran...
Fumie asked about savings, and Shigeru laughed and said, "None!" Fumie said, "But how..." Shigeru said, "When we sell some manga, we have money."
At this point, the new upstairs man interrupted, and lifted a tea kettle. "Excuse me, but could I have some water?" Fumie hurried to put water in his kettle. He sat down and offered a small envelope to Shigeru. "Here's this month's rent." Shigeru looked inside, and said, "Right. 3000 yen." (about 30 dollars now, but maybe 10 dollars then?) Then Shigeru said, "We'll take care of water and such later."
Fumie returned the kettle, and asked about the difference between the rental manga and the magazine manga markets. The upstairs guy said, "It's simple. Money."
Next, Fumie was listing money (making a budget). She pondered, "Shigeru is always working, we can't really talk. But he works so hard, why is there no money?"
Later, as Fumie was hanging wash outside, Shigeru came out and said, "I'm leaving for a bit." Fumie asked where he was going, and he said, "I've finished the manga, and I'm going to deliver it. We'll have money!"
Fumie picked some wildflowers. Then she swept the kitchen, singing "There's no place like home." Next she opened the doors to Shigeru's workroom and said, "I'll just air it out a little." As she looked around the room, with books laying open, cumpled balls of paper, and all, she said, "I'll clean it up just a little for him."
Meanwhile, Shigeru was at the publisher's office. He explained the one-eyed Kitaro and eyeball father... and the publisher tossed the manuscript down and said, "It's junk. Look, I've got stacks of your last book that haven't sold. Monsters don't sell! War, that's what people want. Give me more war stories." Shigeru asked for his pay, and the publisher reluctantly pays off.
Shigeru visited the pawnshop, and got a radio. The pawnshop owner asked him "What about a suit?" Shigeru said leave it, and the owner asked, "But when's the wedding?" Shigeru said, "I've already gotten married. How about giving me something as a wedding present?" The owner said, "Me? Don't be silly." Then Shigeru looked at a bicycle in the pawnshop, and the owner explained that it was brand-new, never used, wouldn't Shigeru like to buy it? Shigeru looked at the money he had left, and said not today, later maybe.
Back at the house, Shigeru gave the radio to Fumie. She thanked him, and he said he knew that sometimes she must be lonely. Then he looked at his office... and cried, "NO! What happened?" Fumie said, "I just straightened it up a little." He angrily told her "Don't ever touch anything in here again!"
To be continued...
