Ge-ge-ge no nyobou 5/1

aka Special places...

This episode started with Shigeru and Fumie walking the bicycles, listening to the sound of running water. The voice over said it was their first date.

And the theme ran.

Riding the bicycles to a temple with a gift shop. Fumie looked at a small straw horse, and Shigeru bought it for her. The woman running the shop asked if they were newlyweds, and assured them that the temple blessing would bring children.

Fumie mused that Shigeru had asked about riding bicycles at the wedding interview. She asked him, "Were you looking for someone who could ride a bike?" He laughed and said, "No, I was looking for an eye." She said, "What?" He said, "When we sat down for the interview, there was a big, beautiful eye peeking between the doors. As an artist, I know that when you know the eye, you know the person. And that's how I thought about the white sheet." Fumie looked puzzled, and asked, "What white sheet?" Shigeru said, "Oh, nothing. Maybe later."

Fumie laughed, and said, "Eating." Now Shigeru was puzzled. Fumie explained, "Genbee said that eating power is living power -- how you eat shows how you live. And you ate with such gusto!" (roughly translated) They both laughed now.

Walking further into the woods, they came upon some of the same wildflowers that Fumie had picked to decorate the work room. Shigeru admired them, and Fumie asked if they should pick them. He said, "No, no, leave the flowers here to delight the eye." Then he thought about it, and said, "Maybe just one" and picked it. He held it up and said, "Look closely at it. The leaves come out where they will, yet they are attractive in their irregularity. And if you look closely, the leaves are little hearts."

As Fumie looked closely at the flowers, Shigeru said, "Oh, let me take you to a special place. One of the best places!"

He led her to a graveyard.

Shigeru walked among the gravestones (which are carved lanterns and other symbols), and said this one is really old, there are some great gravestones here. He stopped at one, and put the wildflower he had picked into the flower holder in front of it, and offered a prayer. Then he invited her to look at an old gravestone nearby.

Back at the house, they sat in the kitchen. He held out a small envelope. "This is the money we have. It's not much. But you keep it." (It's very common in Japan for the housewife to keep the money and manage the budget.)

Then he said that the publisher didn't buy the last manga (kitaro). But he is sure that the publisher will buy the next one. Don't worry. Do you think we can do it? Fumie said yes.

Then Fumie asked about the white sheet. He explained that at the wedding interview, she suggested a manga character to him, a white flying sheet. To explain, he sketched the figure, with eyes, arms, and long twisting tail. She asked if she could have it. He said, "You aren't upset about being compared to a flying sheet?" She said, "They used to call me telephone pole. This is much better."

As Shigeru went into his office, he said, "Please clean my office sometimes. Just... don't move things around too much, okay?"

He started drawing with the doors open.

That evening, as the upstairs guy came home, a strange young man with glasses rushed up to him in the street and grabbed his shoulders. "Mizuki? Aren't you Mizuki?"

In the kitchen, Shigeru and Fumie were fixing nabemono on a hotplate on the table. (Nabemono is literally things in a pot -- roughly stew, but usually with large chunks of vegetables, cooked by the people eating it in a common pot. Very good!) The upstairs guy came in, visibly shaken. Shigeru said, "What's wrong?" The upstairs guy said, "Something very weird. There's a really weird guy who grabbed me outside looking for somebody. He wanted Mizuki, and I told him there was no one here with that name, so I think I got rid of him." Shigeru said, "Mizuki? That's my pen name." The upstairs guy said, "Your name? Oh..." Fumie asked, "Could it be work?" Both the men shook their heads, "No, not at this hour. Probably trouble."

Just then, there was a banging at the doors, and someone yelled, "Mizuki? This is where Mizuki lives, isn't it? Let me in!" Shigeru led the way to the door, with Fumie following, ladle held ready to bash. When they opened the door, a round-faced man with a black bag burst in. "Where's Mizuki? Where are you hiding him?"

Shigeru said, "I'm Mizuki. What do you want?"

The round-faced man pushed forward, into the kitchen. As they stared at him, he said, "You're Mizuki!" Then he opened his black bag, and pulled out ... one of Shigeru's books. "I read your book! You're great!" And he hauled out another and another book. "I'm your fan!"

This episode ended with a medley of upcoming scenes -- more like teasers of scenes, they were very short. Policemen, Fumie in tears, etc.

I'm getting awfully fond of Fumie and I'm glad Shigeru is a little more revealed of having some kind of interest in her. I've no clue where all this is going...it seems like they have set up a mass of possible directions to go in. I'm glad you keep posting the summaries. I enjoy them.

Glad you're enjoying them. I think it's a fun show. My guess -- remember this is bibliography based, so they have real characters and events to use -- I know Shigeru ended up becoming famous for Ge-ge-ge no Kitaro, so somewhere along the way, that one has to become a hit. But they're focusing on the characters, which I think is good. And they've got six months to run, so...

poo -- make that biographically based. Fumie's autobiography, I think. Bibliography based? Not awake today, I think.
