aka Fans and Falls

This episode started with the strange fan holding up a book and announcing "I've read all your books! You're great!" Shigeru said, "Who are you?" He introduced himself, and said he was a fan. Then he dashed around the table, grabbed Shigeru's empty sleeve, and shook it. When he realized there was no arm inside the sleeve, he dropped it, apologized, and Shigeru shook hands with him.

Then the fan (Inui Shinji) looked past Shigeru and said, "Who is that?" Fumie stood there, with her ladle still raised. Shigeru said, "It's okay, he's a guest." She put the ladle behind her back, and said, "Welcome!"

That's when they ran the theme. This episode had the longer version, which includes Shigeru and Fumie bicycling with monsters. It's between Shigeru scratching his head and the old street play.

All of them were sitting around the table, laughing about the misunderstanding. Inui-san (the fan) commented on being surprised that Shigeru had lost his arm, and Shigeru said it only takes one hand to draw.

Then the upstairs guy started to excuse himself and go upstairs. Shigeru looked in the pot and said, "It's mostly hakusai (cabbage), but you're welcome to join us."

Inui-san, the fan, said, "I'm really looking forward to reading the next kitaro book." Shigeru said, "Well, it won't be soon." Inui-san said, "I know, it takes time to draw." Shigeru said, "No, that's not it. The publisher didn't buy the next one." Inui-san exploded. "What? But the best is coming!" Fumie looked very worried, and Shigeru reassured her, "Don't worry, I'll sell others." Inui-san grumped, "Rental comics are no good, all they think about is money. They don't appreciate good art."

Shigeru tasted the stew, and said, "I think it needs more flavor." Then he ladled out more food for Inui-san and said, "Here, eat. Being angry makes you hungry."

Later that evening, Shigeru and Fumie said goodbye to Inui-san outside. Shigeru worried about whether the trains were running, and Inui-san said, "No, I ride my bicycle. It's about 30 minutes away." Shigeru said, "Oh, you should go this way, it's shorter." Inui-san said, "No, no. That's dangerous. I'll go the long way." Then he looked at Shigeru and said, "Please, draw kitaro again sometime."

In the spring, with the cherry blossoms drifting through the window, Shigeru was drawing war stories. Fumie was hanging the wash outside. She got the mail and went inside, reading a card from Genbee, her father. "He's selling cola now?" She glanced up at the sketch of the white sheet, and thought the tail moved.

Then she wrote a card answering Genbee. Shigeru came out of his work room, yawning, with his shoulder bag. "It's done, and I'm off to deliver it." Fumie asked him what she should say in the card. He said, "Just tell them I'm healthy."

As she sat down to continue writing, there was a loud sound outside. She rushed out, to find Shigeru sprawled on the ground. He struggled up, and winced as he put weight on his ankle. He grumbled about being sleepy, and tripping himself.

Inside, they looked at the ankle. Even after washing with cold water, it was swelling. But Shigeru tried to stand up, then winced. "I have to deliver this." Fumie said, "You can't walk. But... could I do it?" He looked at her. She said, "I'll go."

Shigeru drew a map, and gave her instructions. He said that the editor would comment about how hard the publishing business is, and that Shigeru needed to make his stories lighter and more courageous. He saluted her, and she returned the salute. "Here I go!"

Fumie walked up the stairs and into the corridor outside the publisher's office. It's run-down. She looked at the door, and said, "That's it." She opened it, and stuck her head in. A man in a dirty shirt was arguing with the publisher, pushing him into the couch.
