a.k.a. fame and fortune?

This episode started with Fumie putting her head in the publisher's office, just in time to see a man in a dirty shirt begging the publisher to buy his work. Tomita, the publisher said no, and threw him out. Then he started to sit down and looked at Fumie. "Who are you? If you're here to sell something we don't need any." Fumie said, "I'm Murai's wife." Tomita shrugged. She said, "I'm Mizuki's wife." Now he looked up and said, "Oh!"

The theme ran...

Back in the office, Tomita, the publisher, was looking at the manuscript. He was sitting down, and looked up at Fumie who was looming over him. "Wouldn't you like to sit down?" Fumie shook her head, "No, I'm fine." Tomita shuffled the pages, and said, "They are very dark, aren't they? Tell your husband to write brighter stories, with bravery and courage." Fumie remembered Shigeru telling her that the publisher would say this (flashback). Then Tomita got up and looked out the window. "Selling war stories is hard work." Fumie said, "It's hard for us, too." Tomita got out the money and paid her. "So Shigeru can't walk? I was going to talk to him. Do you think he can come in tomorrow?" Fumie said, "I don't know but I don't think so." Tomita shook his head, "I don't want him to miss this chance."

Just then, Uraki (nezumi kozo, the sneaky guy) pushed the drapes open and stepped out of the back office. "It's OK, I'll go to the house." Fumie said, "What are you doing here?" Uraki got out a business card and handed it to her. "Manga producer?" Tomita said, "Shigeru should have told me about Uraki. He's got some great ideas for publicity." Uraki said, "Don't worry, I'll come to the house and explain our great idea." He smiled (and looked so sweet that you knew he was up to no good).

Next, Fumie was buying vegetables at the shopping center. The shopkeeper said, "You're late today." Fumie said yes, I had to go into town. Then the shopkeeper said that the old woman at the bookstore was complaining about rheumatism again. (Tanaka Kiyo -- we'll call her Kiyo, okay?)

Fumie went to visit and burn okyu on Kiyo's arm again. The owner (Tanaka Michiko) said, "Do you want to eat dinner now?" Fumie said, "Isn't it early?" The old woman explained that they usually eat early, because the bookstore is busy in the evening. She said the store runs from 10 o'clock in the morning to 10 o'clock at night every day. Fumie offered to cut cabbage. Then she ended up helping to shelve new books and returned books. Michiko asked whether her husband would worry because she was so late. Fumie said she would go home right after this. But she looked at Shigeru's books, and sighed. "Not borrowed?"

Just then, a young man pulled one of Shigeru's books off the shelf. He carried it to the checkout stand and asked Michiko, "Do you have his next one yet?" Michiko looked at it and said, "Isn't it scary?" Scary but fascinating. She said she would ask about the next one. He said well let me borrow this one again. Michiko said, "Haven't you read it three times already?" He nodded, and said, "Yes, but I like to reread it. It's very good."

The three young girls came in and saw the young man. They asked what are you reading? He ducked out of the store, apparently embarrassed.

In the store, the girls commented to each other and Michiko that he was a strange young man, always reading odd books.

The young man stood outside the store looking at the girls. He told himself he was a fool.

The girls asked Michiko what she suggested they read next, that they really liked the other book she recommended. Kiyo, the old woman, told Fumie that they come in all the time and ask her for advice. "But won't your husband be hungry now?"

Fumie left the store, and looked back at Michiko talking to the young girls. She commented to herself that Michiko really was the mother of the town.

Over dinner, Shigeru told Fumie that the young man probably was shy and didn't have any hobbies, just reading. Fumie said she had misunderstood, that she had thought only children read manga. Shigeru told her that adults and kids need amusement, and that's what manga provides.

The next day, outside their house, Uraki faced Shigeru and Fumie with a large white board in his hands. He turned the board and showed them bold black writing. He pointed at the house and announced, "From today, this house is the headquarters of the young men's club for military history."
