aka What do you say?

In the bookstore, Maiyumi, the teenage girl, tried to give Michiko, the bookstore owner, a love letter for Taichi, the teen boy. Maiyumi said, "He comes in here sometimes." Michiko urged her outside, and then pushed the letter back into her hands. They pushed the letter back and forth.

Meanwhile, Fumie and Kiyo, the old woman, watched Taichi in the dining room, where they had overheard Maiyumi asking Michiko to give him a love letter.

And Shigeru was watching the publisher look at the drawings he had brought. The man scratched his head, and stared at them. Shigeru said, "I'm still working on it..." The man sat down and said, "Right, but I want you to use as many pages as you need. Make it a big book!"

The theme ran...

The publisher said, "You'll need to set up Kitaro's birthday. And we'll need to think about the series..." Shigeru said, "Wait a minute." The publisher looked puzzled, then smiled. "Oh, that's right, I haven't introduced myself, have I?" He jumped up, and fumbled around his desk, opening drawers. "Where are those business cards?" Then he stuck his hands in his pants pockets, and said, "Oh, there's one." He pulled it out and handed it to Shigeru -- upside down. "I'm Fukuzawa Youichi, of Sankai Publishers." (We'll call him Fukuzawa, okay?) Then he coughed, apologized, and said, "Sleeping on the couch isn't good for me." He picked up a shot glass from the desk and drank it.

Then Fukuzawa got out a copy of Shigeru's book (from the old publisher). He said, "I really liked your work, but I thought you were going to be stuck doing war stories forever." Shigeru looked at him and said, "Can you publish Kitaro?" Fukuzawa said, "Yes."

Then Shigeru hesitated, and said, "I do have a request." Fukuzawa leaned back. "Go ahead." Shigeru said, "Could you pay me now?"

Meanwhile, Michiko came back into the dining room. Taichi said, "I'm sorry. I don't know why she came here." Michiko said, "It's not a problem." He shook his head, "Oh, it's a big problem. How... what happened to the letter?" Michiko said, "She took it with her. I think she'll try to find you herself." He turned away. "Well, now I've ruined everything." Michiko said, "No you haven't. Look, eat something. An empty stomach makes everything look worse." She took a plate and heaped potato salad and noodles on it. He frowned, and said, "Don't baby me. It's ruined." Michiko touched his arm, and said, "You'll have lots of chances to talk to her. Look, sit down and..." He knocked her arm aside, and the food fell on the floor. "It's not that simple." He turned and ran out.

Kiyo looked at Michiko and said, "He's upset. Don't worry, he'll be back."

Out in the bookstore, someone called. Kiyo started to get up, and Michiko said, "No, no, I'll take care of it." She went out.

Fumie sat there, wondering. The voice over asked, "What do you say? Taichi was so sensitive, he would be upset no matter what you say."

Later, at the house, Fumie looked into an envelope. Her eyes widened, and she pulled out several bills. Shigeru smiled, "He paid us ahead! It's a really good company, not cheap like Tomita."

In a flashback, Shigeru said, "I'm sorry to ask, but Tomita... he never paid me for the books." Fukuzawa said, "Oh, no. That must be hard on you. Wait..." He got a money box out of his desk, and dug out three crumpled 10,000 yen bills. He laid them in front of Shigeru. "There, will that help?" Shigeru stammered, "Yes, yes."

Back in the kitchen, Fumie said, "It sounds good." Then she fingered the bills. "Did you say 30,000 yen?" Shigeru said, "Oh, yes. I bought some things." He picked up a bag from beside himself, and emptied it on the table. "Coffee, chocolate bars, chicken curry -- it's very sweet -- caramel, candy." He set a bag of coffee, three chocolate bars, two cans of chicken curry, a handful of caramels and candies on the table. Fumie looked at it, and her face twisted. Shigeru said, "What's wrong?" She said, "It's just all expensive stuff. We could have gotten a lot more..."

Shigeru frowned. "No. This was good. If you act poor, you feel poor." Then he picked up a chocolate bar and tucked it in his pocket. "I'll do a little work before dinner." He went into his work room and shut the doors.

Fumie picked up a can of curry and looked at it. She sighed, and grumbled to herself. "You don't have to spend lots of money to feel good. Right?" She glanced up at the framed sketch of the white sheet character -- which nodded, emphatically.

Meanwhile, back in the Iida household, everyone was eating dinner when Miyako, Fumie's mother, asked Genbee, Fumie's father, "You're going to Tokyo?" He said, "Yes, for business. I'll be there for three days." The rest of the family started urging him to visit Fumie, but he said, "No, no. It would look as if I was spying on them." Finally he said, "No. That's the last I want to hear about it."

Later that evening, Genbee sat reading a newspaper while Miyako looked at a postcard. Genbee glanced at it. "From Fumie?" Miyako nodded. "It's an old one, right?" Miyako shook her head, "No, it came today." Genbee tossed his paper down and grabbed the card. "Why didn't you tell me?" Miyako shrugged, "It's just like all the others. She's healthy, and Shigeru is working hard." Genbee said, "See. Everything is all right." Miyako looked thoughtful. "Do you think it's the truth? I mean, they're always the same. I used to... well, I never told my father when we had trouble."

In the kitchen, Fumie tasted the chicken curry. "Oh, that's good." Shigeru smiled, "I told you." Then she poked at the meat and said, "I wonder what kind of meat that is? And how did they cook it?" Shigeru frowned. "You don't need to take it apart today. Just enjoy it." Fumie said, "Well, I just wondered if I could tell Michiko about it. Oh, that reminds me, do you think Taichi will be okay? I wonder what I can do to help him, or Michiko. She was so upset. What should I say the next time I see them?" Shigeru said, "Better not say anything about it. Can I have some more water?" Fumie took his glass and went to the sink. Shigeru said, "Best thing is to leave it alone. Your worrying won't help." Fumie looked at the sink and mumbled to herself, "How can he say that? Is he really that cold?"

Fumie was washing dishes when someone outside called, "Excuse me. Is this the Murai residence?" She answered the door, and saw a young man in a blue uniform, with a blue cap. He said, "Telegram for Fumie Murai?" She smiled, and said, "A telegram? For me?" He handed it to her, and she said, "Thank you." He turned and left.

Fumie unfolded the telegram and started reading it in the kitchen. Shigeru rolled over and watched from the workroom. "What's that?" She said, "The 22nd? That's tomorrow." Shigeru nodded from his work room. Then she said, "Coming to Tokyo?" She sank to her knees. She said, "What do I do now?"
