a.k.a. sometimes being over is good

Masashi, Michiko's husband, sat in Shigeru's kitchen. Masashi ask Shigeru, "You said to do what you loved. But what if someone was pushing you?"

Shigeru look puzzled, and Masashi explained. "I really love doing electrical work. I'm good at it. But during the war, I was a prisoner of war in Siberia. And I did some electrical work. Just because I wanted to do it. But they gave me bread because I did the work, and then... the other prisoners thought I was a spy, or that I was betraying them." He shook his head. "The only thing that kept me alive was thinking about Michiko and my child. I knew I had to stay alive to get back to them." He looked down at this hands. "And then... after 3 1/2 years, I finally came back to Japan. And found out my child had died."

Masashi looked at Fumie. "Can you understand? I can't... I can't answer Michiko when she wants me to. I think I lost my heart in Siberia. All those people who died... how can I forget them?"

Shigeru nodded. "I think you're right. Lots of people died. That's very sad, and we need to keep that in our hearts. But..." Shigeru smiled at Masashi. "That's what makes it important for the people who lived to keep going. To do the things you love, for them."

Matsui, the shopkeeper's wife turned cosmetics saleslady, called from the entryway. Fumie answered her, and Matsui asked, "Is Michiko here? Kiyo came home, and there's no one there. She's worried, and we're all looking for her." Masashi stepped into the entryway. Matsui said, "What are you doing here?" He said, "I came to talk to the sensei." Matsui said, "Well, I have to do some customer calls." She slapped her cosmetics case, and left.

Masashi and Fumie walked into the street. Masashi said, "But where would Michiko have gone?" Fumie said, "The graveyard?" She thought about the gravestone where she had seen Michiko offering a candy bar and soda, and praying to the dead child. Masashi nodded. "Oh, you're probably right. Well, when she calms down, she'll come back."

Fumie looked at him and said, "You need to go. She said it was over, and she cried. If you don't go, she might not come back." He took a deep breath. Then he said, "I'm going."

Shigeru came out and said, "Take the bicycles. It'll be faster."

Masashi and Fumie turned a corner on the bicycles, and stopped. Michiko was trudging up the street ahead of them. Masashi called out, "Where are you going?" She took another step. "Home is the other way." She turned and looked at him. He held out his hand, and said, "Let's go home."

Back at the bookstore, Michiko and Masashi sat down at the table. Kiyo sat down, and Fumie said, "Well, I should probably leave now..." Masashi held up his hand. "Wait. Could you... please listen?" She knelt at the side of the table. He turned to Michiko and said, "Michiko... I want to leave. In Chiba, I can work in an electric repair shop. And... I really want to try. I haven't done it a long time, so it may be hard. But I want to try." Then he stretched out his hand. "I want us to try together." He waved at Kiyo. "Mother too. All three of us."

Michiko said, "What about the bookstore?" He said, "Could we move it there? I know it would be hard, but Chiba needs rental bookstores, too." Michiko tilted her head. "But..."

Masashi looked at the table. "I'm really sorry." Michiko looked at Kiyo. "Well... OK. I'll go. Mother?" Kiyo slowly nodded.

Masashi looked at Fumie and said, "Please tell Mizuki sensei thank you."

Later, in the bookstore, Masashi was helping Michiko stack books and put them in boxes. Michiko shook her head. "There's just too many books. I have to get rid of some of them." Then she looked at Masashi and said, "You know the name of the store? It's Komichi, because that's my name turned around. So really, anywhere I am, that's where my store is." She laughed, and turned to stack more books.

Masashi looked at her, and put his hand in his pocket. He looked thoughtful, and pulled the ribbon and medal out that he had picked up earlier. Then he walked over and put it on Michiko. She picked up the medal and said, "What?" He smiled. "You fought so hard, you're the winner."

October 10, the weather was beautiful and it was the start of the Olympics. Shigeru sat at the kitchen table, banging on the radio with Aiko beside him. Fumie came in, "Are the Olympics start... stop banging on the radio, you'll break it." She took it away. "Aiko, your father just doesn't understand radios." After a moment, he snatched it back, and started to pound on it again. "No, you just don't understand. You have to show them who's boss."

Taichi ran in, and said, "Fumie! It's terrible. Michiko is leaving."

At the bookstore, Michiko and Masashi were loading the last boxes and bundles into a truck. Masashi said, "Is that all of it?" Michiko looked at the store, closed with a sign on the door, and sighed. "Yes, that's it."

Fumie and Taichi ran up. Taichi was carrying Aiko. Fumie said, "You didn't tell us you are leaving today." Michiko rubbed her hands together. The storekeeper's wives ran up. "You were going to leave without telling us?" Michiko said, "I thought you would all be busy with the Olympics, and wouldn't see... I was going to write you letters afterwards." Fumie said, "But we were going to have a going away party for you."

Michiko said, "Well, I didn't think I could laugh... and I didn't want you to see me crying." Shigeru joined the group, and Masashi said, "Sensei. Thank you so much. We're going to try." Michiko nodded and said, "And no matter how well the store does, our number one display will always be for Mizuki manga." Shigeru smiled at them both, and said, "Ganbatte." (Fight on). Masashi looked at Michiko, and said, "Let's go." They climbed into the truck, with Kiyo in the middle, and drove away.

Taichi, Aiko, Fumie, Shigeru, and the three storekeeper's wives stood and watched them leave.

This episode ended with bits of the upcoming week again. Way too fast for more than impressions -- Shigeru drawing, Haruko looking at magazines, Shuhei eating, someone laying down manga in front of Shigeru, and Kinuyo slapping the table and telling everyone to straighten up!
