Funayama, the TV producer, asked, "Do you think we should do a movie or television?" Shigeru said, "I think television is better."
Fumie said goodbye to Toyokawa and Funayama in the street in front of the house. As they walked away, she shook her head. "Kitaro on television? Am I dreaming?" As she walked back into the house, she looked at the cherry tree nearby, with its blossoms gently falling.
Inside, Shigeru was sitting at his worktable, looking at the original old Kitaro books. Fumie looked over his shoulder, and said, "I remember when I first saw those, they were so scary. They're still pretty scary." Shigeru said, "Yes, but it's strange. Kids who read these, now they want a series."
Fumie said, "Why did you decide to do TV? Movies... everyone likes movies." Shigeru set the book aside. "No, television is better. A movie, people see it once, and then it's done. But television... it goes on again and again, many times." He looked at Fumie. "Rental manga, kamishibai, they all had their time, and then went away. I have to think ahead. Television will keep paying us."
Another day, Fumie was sweeping the street outside the house. Shigeru came out, and grabbed his bicycle. He picked up a bucket and set it in front of the front door. Fumie said, "Are you going somewhere?" He said, "I'm just going to ride around a bit." She said, "But isn't Kitamura inside?" Shigeru said, "Yes. That's why I'm going to ride around. Tell him to just wait."
Shigeru rode off down the street, just as Kitamura pushed the door open. The bucket crashed. Kitamura called out, "Sensei? Wait..." He stepped out of the gate, and looked down the road. "He escaped. Fumie, do you have another bicycle? I'll follow him." Fumie shook her head. "No, he needs some time alone." Then she held out the broom. "Actually, while you're here, I need to go, too." Kitamura said, "What? Leave me alone here?" She smiled at him. "Yes. You can do it."
In the kitchen, Kitamura sat with Aiko at the table. He drew a rounded blob of a horse with a crayon. Aiko looked at it and said, "What's that?" He smiled. "That's a horse." She frowned. "That's not a very good horse." She pulled the paper over and started drawing a horse's head and mane. Kitamura looked around at the door. "Sensei, hurry back. Please?"
At a nearby small temple, Shigeru put the bicycle on its stand. He looked around and said, "That's better. I can't get ideas with people around me all the time." He walked towards the temple and the crows in the trees cawed. He glanced up at them. "Crows! Wait a minute..." He sat on the steps of the temple and got a small sketch pad out of his pocket. He drew Kitaro hanging from strings, with crows at the top of the strings. "A crow helicopter. Sure, that way he can go anywhere." A mellow bass voice asked, "But can crows carry a person? Shigeru said, "Ah, but he's not an ordinary person. He has special powers..." The voice said, "Oh, of course."
Shigeru looked up as a long-haired man with a goatee quietly stepped around him and settled on the stairs nearby. He had on a blue work shirt and black pants. He opened a sketch pad and started to work on details of a sketch of the temple, filling in the trees, adding clouds to the sky. Shigeru looked at the drawing and said, "Are you an artist?" The man continued to sketch. "No, I draw manga. But right now the publishers are all closing, so I don't have any work." Shigeru said, "Ah, rental manga." The man nodded. Then he added a few more lines to a cloud in the sky in his sketch. Shigeru smiled.
Meanwhile, in Fukuzawa's office, Fumie handed him a large envelope with a draft manga. Fukuzawa said, "So Mizuki is very busy right now. Lots of manga, and television, too." Fumie nodded. Fukuzawa said, "I guess that means you're busy, too." Fumie said, "Yes, between delivering manga and telephone calls, I really don't have quiet time at the house anymore." Fukuzawa said, "Well, this might help. I've hired another helper. Let me introduce Saito." A young man came from a desk in the corner of the office, and bowed. Fukuzawa said, "He can come pick up manga." Fumie said, "But I enjoy coming here and talking to you." Fukuzawa chuckled. "Me, too, really." Then he said, "Oh, I almost forgot. I talked to the artist Shigeru was interested in? He's in Osaka, but he's very excited about being an assistant to Mizuki. I think he'll be here as soon as he can." Fumie said, "That's good. I'll tell Shigeru." Fukuzawa leaned forward. "You should suggest that Mizuki-sensei make a production company." Fumie said, "A production company?" Fukuzawa nodded. "Yes, they're springing up here and there. Manga really isn't a one-man job anymore. Kanou, you talked with that one recently, didn't you?" Fumie said, "But a company? For production?" Kanou stood up from her desk and walked over. "Yes, they're good for business. I could go explain it to Mizuki-sensei, if that would help."
Someone knocked on the door of the office, then walked in. A young man stepped in. He had a small bag in his hand. Saito said, "Are you here to deliver manga?" The young man shook his head. "No, I'm an artist, but..." Fukuzawa said, "Wait a minute, are you Kurata?" The young man nodded. Fukuzawa jumped up and shook his hand. "I'm Fukuzawa. I was waiting for you, but I didn't think you'd be here yet. That was really fast." Kurata said, "I just told them I was quitting. Packed my bag, and came up." Fukuzawa grinned. "Good timing. Here, this is Mizuki-sensei's wife."
Walking in the shopping center, Fumie asked Kurata, "Have you found a place to live yet?" He shook his head. "No, I got off the train and went to Fukuzawa's office." Fumie said, "So, I guess you'll have to go back and get your household belongings?" He shook his head and lifted the small bag in his hand. "No, this is all I have." Fumie said, "Oh. Well, if you need other things, I can show you the stores here."
As they walked up the street to the house, Kurata looked at the house and slowed down. Fumie glanced at him, then said, "This is our house. I know it's a little old..." Kurata shook his head, staring at the house. "No, it's fine. If there is work here, I'm happy."
As they step through the gate, Fumie and Kurata heard a voice saying, "Don't tell me to leave, please?" Fumie opened the door just enough to look through it with one eye. She saw a young man standing there, glaring at Shigeru. She muttered, "That man from yesterday?" The young man said, "You told me to practice, and I did. So now I'm here to be your assistant." Shigeru scratched his neck.
Fumie opened the door and stepped inside. "Excuse me..." The young man turned, and said, "Oh, the lady of the house. I'm Sugai, the assistant." Kurata stepped inside. Fumie said, "Shigeru, this is Kurata." Shigeru said, "Kurata? From Osaka? Great! I've got work for you." Shigeru grabbed Kurata's arm and pulled him inside. Fumie pushed past Sugai and followed them, leaving Sugai standing in the entryway.
In the kitchen, Shigeru had Kurata sit on one side of the table. The bearded man from the temple sat on the other side, working on a manga sheet. He nodded to Kurata. Shigeru went into his work room. Kitamura stood there, in his suit, with Aiko on his back. Kitamura said, "Sensei? When are you..." Shigeru said, "Not yet." He picked up a couple of sheets, and went back into the kitchen.
Shigeru handed the sheets to Kurata and said, "Add some background to these, okay?" Kurata picked up a sheet, and stared at it as Shigeru turned and went back into the work room. As Fumie watched, Kurata's eyes lit, with tiny flames dancing in the middle. Then she glanced at the long-haired, bearded man sitting on the other side of the table. He nodded to her, and dipped his pen before continuing work on a sheet of manga in front of him. Fumie clutched her bag and went into the work room. She whispered to Shigeru, "Shigeru? Who's he?" Shigeru glanced up for a moment. "Oh, he's a manga artist I found at the temple. His name...what was it? Oh, there's no time right now." He looked back at the sheet in front of him.
Sugai walked in from the entryway. He looked at the two men working on manga at the table, and smiled. He pulled a pencase from his pocket, and called to Shigeru. "Sensei? I'll just help you here then, OK?" Shigeru glanced up. "Are you still here?" Sugai picked up a sheet and started to work on it.
