Izumi told Shigeru on the telephone where Aiko's present was, and urged him to give her a good birthday party. Shigeru hung up the telephone and rubbed his face, looking at Aiko. Kurata, the intense assistant, came in and said, "Kitamura, the Shonen Land assistant, is here?" Shigeru frowned. Then he asked Aiko, "Would you like to come to work with us for a while?" She nodded.
Kurata asked, "How about Fumie?" Shigeru said, "Don't worry, they'll take care of her."
Aiko said, "Where did mommy go?" Shigeru said, "Well, she went to the hospital. She'll bring back a little baby. Now, do you want to go to work?" She said, "Yes!"
In the workroom, Shigeru drew, quickly. He said, "Sugai! Eraser!" and set a sheet aside. He glanced at the clock, and shook his head. Kitamura sat with Aiko, a party hat on his head. He said, "Sensei? What about the deadline?" Shigeru said, "Just a little more." He touched up another sheet.
Later, in the dark living room, Shigeru talked to Izumi on the telephone. She said, "The baby is all right. It's a girl." He said, "Fumie?" Izumi said, "She's okay too. She needs some time in the hospital, though." Shigeru hung up the phone and took a deep breath.
The next day, Izumi walked along the street to the house. As she approached, a man stepped out of the door, with an envelope clutched to his chest. He smiled at her. "Another draft, right on time. Merry Christmas!" He walked away.
Izumi went into the house. She said, "I'm here." The family area was silent. She looked around, quickly, and said, "Aiko?"
Then Izumi dashed into the workroom, saying, "Aiko's gone! Where..." She fell silent, looking at the assistants asleep at their desks, and Shigeru asleep in Sachiko's chair. Aiko was curled up in Shigeru's chair, with a blanket tucked around her. The table where they set food held the platters from Aiko's party, with a few scraps left. Izumi said, "This is terrible."
She walked over and woke up Aiko, who looked at her, and gave her a hug. "You're back!"
Izumi and Aiko walked into the family living room. Izumi said, "Stay right here." She walked around and looked in the cabinet. Aiko's birthday present was still there. She shook her head, then picked up the present and hid it behind her back. She walked out, and said, "Aiko? Here's your present!" She held it out. AIko squealed.
Aiko said, "But where's mommy?" Izumi said, "She's at the hospital. She'll come back soon, though."
Kurata came in, and said, "Aiko? Here, I made these for you." He held out two paper decorations for the tree, illustrated with Devil Boy on one and Mephisto on the other. Aiko took them, and said, "Devil Boy!"
Izumi said, "That's very kind of you. But where's Sugai?" Kurata said, "Oh, he went home. I'm going home, soon, too." Izumi grabbed his arm, and pulled him into the kitchen.
Izumi said, "I wanted to ask you to be a little kinder to Sugai. You are all very cold to him." Kurata said, "Well..." Then she said, "I also wish you would have taken a break for Aiko's birthday. I know work is important, but so are children's birthdays. No one even gave her a present." Kurata shook his head. "You really don't understand. It's not that simple. We had to meet the deadline. So we gave her a party while we worked." Izumi frowned. "You couldn't even stop for a few minutes?" Kurata shook his head. "Not if we're going to meet the deadline."
Aiko cried in the living room. "Ouch, that hurts!" Izumi and Kurata raced into the other room. Izumi said, "What's wrong?" Aiko showed them her hand. "It hurts!" Izumi looked at the reddened skin, and the nearby heater. The Mephisto decoration on the floor near the heater was burnt. Izumi picked up Aiko and ran back into the kitchen. She stuck Aiko's hand under the cold water from the tap.
Shigeru came in. "What wrong?" Kurata said, "Aiko burnt her hand." Shigeru said, "Let me see it." Izumi held it out, and he glanced at it. "She needs to go to the hospital. Right now." Izumi said, "Call a taxi." Shigeru shook his head. "That would take too long." Kurata said, "I'll carry her." He took her out of Izumi's arms, and started to run out. Shigeru stopped at the door to assure Izumi, "Don't worry, I'm sure it isn't serious."
Later that day, Izumi stood in the entryway with Kurata. He was getting ready to leave. She bowed to him, and said, "Thank you." He shrugged. "I'm just glad Aiko wasn't hurt worse. The doctor said you did the best thing, putting it in cold water right away, and thanks to that, she'll be okay." Izumi said, "Yes, but... I was upset, and shouldn't have complained to you. I'm sorry."
Later in January, Shigeru was drawing at his desk, with the assistants at their desks. Shigeru glanced at the clock, and scratched his head and looked back at the drawing on his desk. A car horn sounded outside, and he jumped up. Then he shook his head, and sat down. The horn beeped again. Sugai said, "Is that our car?" Komine said, "No, it's the neighbor's car. They honked the other day."
Outside in the street, a car pulled up. Fumie got out with a baby bundled in her arms. She looked at the house as Izumi got out of the driver's seat. Then Fumie went inside.
Inside the entryway, Fumie called out, "I'm back." Shigeru ran around the corner, then stopped and walked slowly the last few steps. "Glad you're back. And thank you for your hard work." Fumie held the baby up, and Shigeru rubbed her cheek.
Later, Fumie laid the baby on a futon in the family living room. Aiko looked at her new sister, and said, "Cute." Fumie said, "This is your new sister."
As they were watching the baby, Fumie noticed the burn on Aiko's hand. She gently put her hand over Aiko's.
Izumi came into the room, and knelt in front of Fumie. She said, "I'm so sorry. I wasn't watching, and the doctor says that Aiko may have a scar." Fumie put her hand on Izumi's shoulder. "Izumi, it's not that serious. Besides, it's not your fault. Even if I had been here, she still could have burnt herself."
Aiko looked at Izumi and said, "Does your stomach hurt? Mommy cried when her stomach hurt." Izumi chuckled. "No. But would you like to go for a drive?" Aiko said, "A drive?" Fumie said, "That's right. I was surprised to see that you got a car."
Izumi said, "We got it a few days ago, but Shigeru said to keep it a secret and surprise you. Kurata has a driver's license, too, so they've been going to used manga stores." Fumie laughed.
Izumi frowned. "I think we got it because of Aiko, though. When she burnt her hand, I said to call a taxi, but Shigeru said that would take too much time. So they ran with her. I think the next time I asked him about a car, he had thought about what would happen if they needed to get someone else to the hospital."
Izumi looked at Fumie. "I was so scared. First you were in the hospital, then Aiko went to the hospital. I kept thinking that somehow Shigeru would end up in the hospital, and I'd be here all alone." She bit her lip. "But I was wrong, and now you're all back. With a baby!"
Late that night, Shigeru was in the workroom by himself, drawing. Fumie came in, and said, "Am I interrupting?" He shook his head. "No, what is it?" Fumie walked over and said, "Well, I was wondering about a name for the baby. Now that I'm back from the hospital..." He nodded. Then he said, "Here, sit down." He motioned at a nearby chair, and Fumie pulled it closer. She said, "What is it?"
He pointed at the sketch on his table. "Well, I wanted to tell you. About Devil Boy on television?" Fumie nodded. "They decided to continue, at least for this season." Fumie smiled. "So, I guess Devil Boy really did come back." Shigeru shook his head. "But he has to end, you know?" He grinned at Fumie. "After all, I said each Devil Boy only has seven years, so he has to end." Then he tilted his head. "I think four years will be enough, don't you?" She chuckled. Then she got up and started to leave. "Do think about a name for the baby, will you?"
He laughed. "A name? Here!" He pulled a piece of paper out of his desk drawer and set it on the top. "Yoshiko." It was a sheet like he had drawn for Aiko, with Yoshiko in the middle. This one was decorated with a Devil Boy cartoon, though. Fumie looked at it. "Yurokobu? Happiness? Happy Child? That's a good name."
The episode ended with bits from next week. Several characters echoed Gegege no Kitaro or just Kitaro. There was a group listening to an old phonograph record playing the theme song, "Ge. Ge. Gegege no Ge..." And Fukuzawa collapsing through the front door of the house. Kurata dancing in the street outside the house.
