a.k.a. Who knows what?
Uraki was talking to himself in the hallway. "Wouldn't it be funny if that was Strong Stomach's girlfriend? Wow!" Kinuyo said, "What are you talking about?" Uraki jumped and started to run away, but she reached out with her cane and caught his neck in the crook. "Now, you're going to tell me all about it, aren't you?" Uraki shook his head, then grimaced, then nodded. Kinuyo smiled.
A little later, Uraki limped across the shopping area. He paused at a bench and shook his head. "That's... not good. I guess I'm not going back there for a while."
In their rooms, Kinuyo picked up the cologne. She sneered at it. "So he's meeting someone? Hah!" She started to set the cologne down again, then grinned. She took the cologne and carefully hid it in a cupboard.
In the kitchen, Shigeru and Fumie talked. Fumie said, "Do you think Uraki really saw Shuhei?" Shigeru shook his head. "No, I mean, he's been married to the Anger for so long." Fumie said, "That's true." Then Shigeru said, "But he always has been attracted to pretty young women..." Then he shook his head. "No."
Fumie said, "Well, he has been cheerful recently. But I can't believe..." She paused, then said, "Wait, there was that telephone call." Shigeru said, "What telephone call?" Fumie said, "The other day, he was on the phone in our living room. As I came in, I thought he said something about play and tea afterwards. But then he told whoever it was that they would talk about it later, and hung up. When I asked him about it, he said it wasn't important." Shigeru said, "Well, I heard that Goethe had an affair with a ten year old when he was seventy." He shook his head. "But my father?"
Shigeru sat up straight. "I think the right thing to do is for you to ask him." Fumie said, "Me? Why don't you ask him?" Shigeru shook his head. "I couldn't ask my own father if he's having an affair." Fumie said, "And I don't see how I could ask him."
Aiko came in and said, "I'm home." Fumie said, "Oh, you're early today." Aiko said, "I thought it would be good since we're having dinner with Shuhei and Kinuyo." Fumie said, "I forgot..."
At dinner, Yoshiko, Aiko, and Fumie sat on one side of the table. Shigeru sat at the head of the table, with Shuhei beside him, and Kinuyo by Shuhei's side. Shuhei was happily talking about a play. "It was a wonderful show. With a love affair and..." Kinuyo sneered. "A love affair? Of course." Shuhei shook his head. "It reminded me of the oilman's wife." Fumie said, "The oilman's wife?" Shuhei nodded. "Yes, in the old silent movie, Woman Murderer in the Hell of Oil. Kinuyo, you remember that one, don't you?" She sniffed. "I don't know anything about plays and movies." He shook his head.
Fumie said, "I'll bet Yoshiko doesn't know about silent movies." Yoshiko frowned. "Silent movies?" Shuhei nodded, with a smile. "Yes, silent movies. The old movies had no voices or music, no sound at all." Yoshiko said, "How did you know what people said?" Shuhei grinned. "Just like the old paper theater. A page would appear on the screen, with words. Right?" He looked at Kinuyo. She frowned. He said, "Why your face so grim tonight?" She said, "It's always been this way." Shuhei turned to his food. Kinuyo turned away from him.
Fumie said, "Uh... Yoshiko, how are you doing with that career plan?" Yoshiko said, "I'm still working on it. I have to turn it in later this week." Shigeru picked up his rice bowl. "Why don't you just say you'll be working with your father?" Yoshiko frowned. "I can't draw manga." Shigeru said, "That's all right. We've got lots of different kinds of work. Aiko is going to come work with us."
Aiko smiled. "Actually, I'm taking the teaching exams this week. I'm going to be a teacher." Shigeru set down his bowl. "What? Who said?" Then he glared at Fumie. "Did you know about this?" Fumie said, "No, this is the first I've heard about it." Shigeru looked at Aiko and said, "You really should have talked with me about this before." She smiled and said, "Why? I'm going to be a teacher, so you don't have to find me any work."
Shuhei said, "Being a teacher is good work. I think it's good that she's thinking about it." Kinuyo said, "You would think keeping secrets is good." He turned to her and said, "Why are you arguing with everything I say tonight?" She sniffed.
Another day soon after, Shuhei was dressed up again. He was looking around the dresser. Kinuyo said, "What are you looking for?" He said, "The cologne? I thought it was right here." Kinuyo said, "It's better if you don't have it. It stinks." Shuhei said, "What? A little touch, here and there. It makes a nice feeling." Kinuyo sneered. "Except old men use too much, and it stinks."
Fumie was outside, weeding. Shuhei walked out, and shut the door behind himself. He snorted. "That woman! I don't know what is wrong with her." Fumie said, "Where are you going?" Shuhei said, "Oh, I thought I'd see another play. And I need to get out of Kinuyo's way. She's upset about something." He walked out. Fumie waved goodbye, then turned and looked at the house. She said, "I wornder what Kinuyo is upset about." She tilted her head. "I wonder if Uraki told her something... no, he wouldn't dare."
Later, Aikawa, the assistant, sat down with Fumie and Shigeru in the visitor's room. He held out a wedding invitation. "Here's the wedding invitation. And if you can say a few words, that would be great. Here's a little background history for each of us." He handed them some typed sheets. Fumie said, "What about your fiancee?" Aikawa said, "She really wanted to be here today, but something came up at work and she couldn't come. I hope you don't mind." Fumie said, "Of course, we understand. What kind of work does she do?" He smiled. "She's a teacher at a private school. We went to school together, but she decided not to take the teacher's exams because she would have to go somewhere for her internship, and I didn't want to leave here. So she went to work at a private school instead."
Shigeru looked up from the papers. "Go somewhere for the internship?" Aikawa nodded. "She had a friend who went to a small island. For three years!" Shigeru frowned. Then he set the papers down. He stood up, and walked across the room. Then he turned to Fumie and said, "Where's Aiko?" Fumie said, "At school, I guess. Why?" Shigeru said, "Because she can't do it. If she goes away, she might not come back." Fumie said, "What? We can't do that."
Shigeru frowned. "You knew all this. You planned it!" Fumie said, "No. When have I ever had secrets? I was just as surprised as you were when Aiko told us." Shigeru said, "You should have known. You're too easy-going." Fumie jerked her head up.
Later, Fumie was cooking. Shigeru sat in the living room, reading a newspaper. Yoshiko walked in and said, "I'm home." Shigeru grunted. He folded the newspaper and glared at it. Yoshiko walked into the kitchen and said, "Wow. Dad's upset. What happened?" Fumie stirred the pot, and said, "Who knows?" Yoshiko said, "Oh. You're upset, too." She glanced back and forth at them.
In the coffeeshop, Sugai and Aikawa were sitting at the counter. Sugai said, "I was really surprised at how upset Fumie and Sensei were with each other today." Aikawa said, "You were surprised? I'm not sure I want to get married now."
Kameda, the pawnshop owner, came in. He said, "Oh, good, just the people I want to talk to." He came over and sat at the counter. "So, did Shuhei really get a girl friend?" Sugai said, "What?" Kameda said, "Well, that's the rumor." Aikawa said, "Hum. He has been going out a lot recently." The coffeeshop man looked over their heads at the door and said, "Oh, welcome, good to see you." The three men turned and looked.
Shuhei frowned. Kameda said, "This is a nice meeting." Shuhei said, "No, this is a bad meeting. You're all here?" He took a step forward, and a woman came through the door behind him. Kameda said, "Oh, is this your date?"
Shuhei turned to her, then back to the men. "No. Well, it isn't what it looks like. There's a reason..." He took a step forward, and crashed to the floor.
