I will let you in on a secret. I am terrified of dentists. I know most people don't like them, but I really have a phobia. I go to them, regularly, and they ask if I am all right since I stopped breathing for the last five minutes or indented the plastic arm on the chair (I think I've only managed to crush one hygienist's leg, and she assured me that she understood).

Anyway, I do not enjoy my visits.

The Japanese news this morning showed one of the new technologies some dentist is using. The victim . . . er, make that patient, sits in the chair with eye-trek or one of the goggles. Then the dentist does their thing, except using a close-up video system himself - his stands, with a binocular eyepiece like an old microscope. So the dentist and the patient get to see closeup the cavity, the drill head gouging, vacuum pump sucking, and so forth. Eeyech!

I am fairly certain that I don't really want to see the work in progress. Perhaps afterward, if the dentist really wants me to see what they have done, but during the work? I need to concentrate on breathing, on relaxing, on not getting in the way.

I couldn't tell from the news story whether you get amplified sound too, but I certainly hope not. I know part of my reaction is to the sounds of the dental work - the drill whirring, the vacuum sucking, and so on. I would think putting hard rock or some similar aural barrier into the ear pieces might help.

It is interesting that the dentist in the show apparently is videotaping all of the jobs. I suppose it is a part of your patient record. I can also see a possibility for training future dentists - sit down and watch how this tricky little bit of cavity hid under that crown. Check out those bicuspids!

Interesting, but I think I would rather watch something else while the dentist grinds.

And how the heck do you rinse and spit? Oh, I really don't want to watch!
