Today's Trivial Pursuit
Jul. 11th, 2011 02:38 pmThis morning, one of the advertisements caught my attention. We're hitting "ochuugen" season -- July 15, last day of the Lantern Festival, when many Japanese give each other presents. Often buying a package from one of the department stores and having it delivered.
Anyway, this particular ad was for peaches. It's just time for peaches, so boxes of ripe, succulent peaches make a good ochuugen present. This guy was extolling the virtues of their peaches, picked fresh, shipped that day, etc.
And certified low radioactivity. He was honest enough to say that almost nothing has zero radioactivity, but all of their peaches are checked, and have acceptable low levels.
I don't think they were even in the areas that have been worrisome, but spending some precious air time to reassure us that these peaches have low levels of radiation... (how much do nationwide TV ads during the morning news cost?)
Last year, if an ad mentioned radioactivity, everyone would have wondered what the heck they were talking about. This year...
