Rakugo again?
Nov. 15th, 2007 04:36 pmJust for fun - this was all in today's 15 minute episode!
1. Soso (the last student) shares memories of the teacher's wife with Kiyomi (the heroine) and she remembers a couple of flashbacks of the teacher and his son
2. Kiyomi's mother tries to show her how to make soba and Kiyomi storms off, saying they should use a power mixer, not arm power
3. The free-lance writer, having turned her apartment into a pile of papers since yesterday, opens the door to Kiyomi's uncle who has been deputized to deliver fish from the country - and he zips into the apartment. She starts apologizing for the state of the place, and he asks whether he can have some of the treasures (like an empty coke bottle) - apparently he doesn't even see the mess?
4. the son sneaks into Dad's room to pray at the shrine to his mother, hears his father's voice in the next room doing rakugo, and storms in - only to find Soso listening to a tape.
5. Mother has the family and the teacher sitting down for a feast of soba, fish, etc. Turns out that they are staying for the rakugo performance. Grandma has volunteered to play shamisen, young brother admits to being a fan of Soso, etc. During this, mother comments on how they all loved the teacher, and think it is great that his students are back. He takes a deep breath and says that while they are there, he quit teaching three years ago. Silence.
6. Soso catches the son coming out of his radio station appearance late at night, and challenges him that he really wants to do rakugo with his father. When he denies it, Soso points out that because of him, the teacher and his three students haven't done anything in three years, but the son still uses his father's school name as part of his act - so why is he keeping his father's school name alive? The son jumps into a taxi, denying that is the reason, and as they drive off, we see him slumping.
7. Kiyomi's mother takes another crack at showing her how to make soba. She says you have to keep going, and put your back into it. And as the show ends, we see Kiyomi pushing down on the soba, with a "don" and another "don."
Whoosh! They really pack those 15 minutes. And that metaphoric "let's make soba" thread . . .
I'm enjoying it!
