mbarker: (Fireworks Delight)

This has been a setup week, with lots of odds and ends. Some that particularly caught my attention:

It's hard to figure out when a liar is telling the truth. But welcome back anyway.

Soso and Kiyomi on one side of the table, Yusuke on the other. Yusuke says, "I'm back." Soso says, "What did your parents say?" Yusuke, "Oh, they're okay. I told that I had quit, because you are so poor, and get drunk every day." Soso, "That's a lie!" Yusuke, "Then my father started telling us about skydiving off Mr. Fuji, and not being able to decide where to land, here or there, here or there." Soso, "That's a lie." Yusuke, "Oh, no. Well, the skydiving story is a lie, but my father really did tell it. He likes lies." "So he's the father of lies? What about studying rakugo, did you explain that?" Yusuke, "Yes, at last my parents really understand that I want to do this." Soso, "Really?" Yusuke, "Yes." Soso, "Now is that yes the truth?" Yusuke, with a big smile, "Yes." Soso, "Is that the truth?" Kiyomi interrupts, "Stop that. Yusuke, welcome back." Soso is still glaring. The phone rings, and Kiyomi starts to get up. Soso puts his hand on her arm, and says, "No, sit still. Yusuke, get that." Yusuke gets an enormous smile and jumps up to get the phone.

Hatena no chawan - look at that  tea cup - a rakugo story about misinterpretation

Once upon a time, a tea master was having tea  at a restaurant. As he finished, he stopped and looked carefully at the cup, lifting it up to the light. Then he set it down, saying "Hatena" (look at that). A man sitting nearby picked up the cup, knowing that if this master considered a cup particularly special, it could probably be sold for a very high price. So he bought it from the restaurant owner and went out to make his fortune. After visiting many stores and failiing to find any interest in the cup, he went to the tea master's shop and complained to the clerk. The tea master heard the ruckus and said, "What's the problem?" The man got the cup out, and said, "You were so interested in this cup, so I bought it and tried to sell it everywhere, but no one is interested." The tea master looked puzzled, and said, "May I look at it?" He looked, then said, "I don't recognize it." The man said, "In the shop, you had tea in it, and then looked very closely at it." "Oh, that cup. When I drank the tea, there was a drip. So I was looking to see if there was a crack, and reminded myself to look carefully. That's all."

(Very rough summary of the story - and I think I may have missed something, but that seemed to be the gist of the tale!)

Leading up to Friday's tale of why the factory owner left the little chopstick shop, which I'm probably going to have to tell another time - maybe after we find out what they're going to do on Saturday.
