The news today here in Japan is sort of amusing. As I understand it, there's a group charged with checking that the dogs that sniff out drugs in luggage coming off the planes are doing their job. Now, think about it. How do you check that the dogs sniff out drugs? Well, the obvious thing is to plant some drugs and see if they find them, right? Now what could go wrong with a plan like that, eh?

And indeed, apparently that was the plan. However, having put their nice perforated box full of drugs in some traveller's suitcase, something went wrong. And amongst all the apologies and stuff, the plea is to bring back their box. Please? It's a little unclear from the news exactly what kind of drugs someone walked out with, they keep saying narcotics, but . . . if you happen to have an extra little metal box with holes in it in your suitcase, the police would dearly love to hear from you. They seem to think it was a black suitcase, if that helps.

The box they keep showing is metal, about as big as a paperback book, hinged on one side with a snap or something on the other side, and holes everywhere. Not something that you might not notice in your luggage, I'd say.

I wonder if the dogs are going to get their treat even though they obviously missed the box this time. Go on, give them a treat anyway, they tried.

And whatever backup plan was in place to stop the drugs from walking out the door obviously didn't work, either.

There was a backup plan, right? We weren't just depending on the dogs finding the drugs?

Yeah, you can laugh if you want to. I think it's funny.
