A mattress pad that tells you when it needs cleaning?

One of the ads on TV this morning caught my eye. Basically a quilted cover for your futon (call it a mattress pad), designed for summer time. And the salesdroid was busily explaining that it has some kind of inner layer that absorbs sweat, so that it can hold up to two glass of water (not that I particularly want to sleep on something that has two glasses of water inside). But then he explained about the sensor labels.

Apparently the label is blue normally, but turns pink when the cover needs to be washed and dried. So you don't have to guess whether the coverlet is full or not, it tells you.

I do wonder when the audio version will be available. Imagine a little voice coming from the bed saying, "Wash me, please?"

Somehow the notion of sheets and perhaps eventually other clothing having a built-in guide to "Wash Me" seems like a major step forward to me.

A major step forward toward what? I am really concerned at our growing dependence on being told what to do when, which is equal to a societal tendency not to accept responsibility when we actually do something (the blame game and the victim stance is alive and well everywhere I look). Have you seen WALL-E? Cute animation, painfully true message.

Yeah, after I posted that I got to wondering about just where it was going. It feels like a major step, but I'm not sure where.

I probably won't see WALL-E for some time. Movies come to Japan on an odd schedule, and I don't bother trying to catch them very much. I do know that plenty of people seem to think it's worth seeing.
