Aka Scary, but funny...

Today's episode picked up with the little girl being chased by the ghost. She had just started running yesterday when they cut, and today started with a little bit of that, and she fell down.

A boy sitting in a large tree with a Shinto rope around it called down, "Are you OK?" He was wearing a straw hat, and glasses that are suspiciously like those worn by the artist. He folded up his sketch pad and jumped down to help.

She started talking about the sounds that were following her. He smiled and said, "Oh, that would be betabeta-san [sticky-sticky?]. Sure, he likes to follow people."

Cut to the series theme, etc. I watched a little more closely today, and they include both live and anime pictures in a photo album, and have the Ge-ge-ge no kitaro characters looking at the album and the family house. So there's at least a hint that we're going to see a mixture of the manga anime characters and live action.

Back to the story. She stood up and started to walk on. They said goodbye... when her stomach rumbled. She was hungry.

Cut to the aunt being handed the box of caramels by the clerk. She asked who left it, he said a little girl, and she wondered if it could possibly be her niece.

And back to the little girl and the boy sitting on a set of steps in the woods. He gave her half of a sweet potato, a common snack in Japan. She protested that she should hurry home, but he explained that an empty stomach isn't good. So she started eating the sweet potato.

Then she told him about hearing the sound in the storage room earlier. He laughed and said, "Oh, that's atsukefume." [or something like that] Then he got his sketch pad out and drew a shaggy monster with a big smile. She looked at this sketch and said, "He's not so scary."

Three boys turned up with fishing poles and called for him. He got up and said, "Be careful going home." She bowed to him, and waved goodbye.

He and the boys walked off, the boys teasing him. He said he saw a monster in the woods, and they laughed. As they walked away, the ghost with the fat feet and smile walked across behind them.

Back to the kimono store, where Father was talking with an older woman and young one. They were saying that this cloth is perfect, but the older woman asked, "How much?" Father quoted a price. Mother rolled up the cloth, and handed it back to him, telling her daughter and him "We'll have to think about it."

Then the aunt burst in. "Is the little girl here?"

Father looked up. "Why?" Mother, grandmother, the girls turn up as the aunt explained that she thinks the little girl was at her store in the other town. There was a buzz of conversation, mostly variations on "No, she couldn't have..." Someone asked whether the aunt saw the little girl, and she said, "No, I didn't see her, but someone left this box of caramel."

Grandma remembered that the little girl did try to show us a box of caramel earlier. The sisters said that no one had seen her in a while.

Father got upset. He said she's lost. He yelled at the family, asking why didn't anyone tell him. Then he ran out and everyone else followed. They started to go down the street, when the little brother pointed into the alley by the house. "Isn't that her?"

The little girl came out, and Dad started to bellow, "What are you doing?"

She started to explain about going to the aunt's place. Grandma asked why, and she explained that she heard the aunt had a cold. Father was getting set to yell, when Mother got in front and said, "We were very worried. Don't go alone, okay?"

One of the sisters commented, "Actually, until Aunt mentioned it, none of us missed you."

A shot of the moon led into Grandma telling the two boys and the little girl a night time story. About a giant snake and a challenge to do something... and things that go pop, pop, pop here and there. Then the little girl asked for nagai hanashi (a long story). And Grandma laughed and said, "Nagai hanashi? Nagai, nagai, nagai fundoshi..." (a long story? A long, long, very loooooong clout -- the old Japanese underwear for men).

Cut to Dad reading the paper. Mom talked about the little girl being worried, and very tender-hearted to have tried to give the aunt caramels. Then she reflected a moment and said, "Of course, she'll leave home someday and we'll be very lonely..." He hrumphed and said pour the tea.

Back to the boys asleep. Grandma was walking on the outside porch, and the little girl came out. They sat down and talked. She finally got to tell someone about the funny sound that followed her in the woods, and the boy's explanation. She explained that she learned that some things were kowai kedo omoshiroii -- scary, but funny. Especially things that you can't see, but they are here.

The voice over talked about her learning at seven years old that there is another world here, of things you can't see.

And the picture of the garden in the moonlight acquired a sheen of color, and plops of light popping.

To be continued...

So, they didn't pick up the marriage yet, but continued with the background growing up story. I can't quite decide whether the boy is actually going to turn out to be the same one that she marries later or not, even if he did seem superficially similar. Still, amazing how much they pack into 15 minutes.
