a.k.a. the first time I saw father cry

Genbee (father) arguing with grandma. Apparently he wants to buy a sake manufacturer or something, and they are fighting. He's angry... Fumie comes in, and he orders her to stand straight!

And the theme

Fumie asks Miyako (mother) and Toshi (grandmother) what's going on. They explain that there is a sake manufacturer, and father is fussing about money.

We see father looking at papers, then laying flat on his back and complaining that he can't do it all.

Toshi (grandmother) looking at old book, then goes to pray at the shrine in her room.

Fumie goes to wake Toshi -- and finds her collapsed on the floor in front of the shrine. The doctor tells the family that it is a stroke, and there is nothing really to do. Probably a day or two...

Sister asks mother if there's been any change. Mother tells her to go home, take care of the kids. There's a little talk about how lucky that Fumie hasn't gotten married yet, so she can help take care of grandmother and the house.

Genbee (father) is watching Toshi (flat on her back under a futon, sleeping). He is holding the old book. Fumie calls him. Then she calls again, and gets his attention. She asks him what the book is. He explains that it's an old account book from the kimono shop. Then he opens it and shows her some of the writing. See, very rough characters (childish). She asks if he wrote it as a child, and he laughs, says no, that was mother (Toshi). Fumie says something about her having very good writing. Genbee explains that she taught herself to write, and (flashback) we see her practicing in the middle of the night.

Fumie is watching Toshi, still sleeping. Grandma wakes, and chides her for having such a dark face. Then Toshi tells Fumie about her dream, with a ghost asking about Fumie, and Toshi assuring them that Fumie is doing well, that there is a thread of fate pulling her. Toshi tells Fumie that she'll always be watching, just like the ghost. Then she goes back to sleep.

That was the last time Toshi was ever awake.

Family gathered around Toshi (japanese wake).

Later, one morning, Fumie sees Genbee leaving the house early with a package. She wonders where is he going? Mother says she doesn't know. Fumie follows, and finds Genbee at the riverside, with a small straw boat. He's lighting candles. Fumie says it isn't obon (when people normally do this), and then Genbee lays the old book in the boat. He says he thinks Toshi might want this.

There's a short flashback to Toshi saying that what is sent down the river in the boats goes to the ancestors.

Father pushes the boat into the river, and says go to grandmother.

Back at the house, mother is cutting vegetables. She forgets, and talks to grandmother... then looks around, and remembers. There's a tear on her hand as she cuts the vegetables.

And at the river, Genbee says that he was still fighting with Toshi when she died. He apologizes to Toshi for being such a stubborn son. And he cries.

Fumie's voice tells us that this was the first time she had heard father cry.

Again, nice background, gives us a little more depth on the father and grandmother. But... when do I get the story?
